A titanium alloy, components formed thereof, and methods of use are provided. Embodiments of the alloy may be useful in the energy extraction environment. Components formed of the alloy may include subsea or land-based components associated with oil and gas production and drilling.

Titanium alloy, parts made thereof and method of use

A hockey stick shaft is a hollow, thin-walled tube formed of titanium or a titanium alloy. The tube wall has a thickness which may be uniform, tapered or stepped. The titanium or titanium alloy is of an alpha, a near-alpha, an alpha-beta or a highly-aged beta type. The titanium or titanium alloy has an elastic modulus greater than 13 million pounds per square inch (psi), a yield strength above 50,000 psi and a wall thickness ranging from 0.020 to 0.045 inches. An alternate hockey stick shaft has a titanium or titanium alloy core and exterior formed of a composite material. The titanium or titanium alloy core is of an alpha, a near-alpha, an alpha-beta or a beta type and has a yield strength above roughly 40,000 psi and a wall thickness ranging from 0.010 to 0.040 inches.

A mounting system for supporting elongate, metallic structural members used in offshore applications and subject to dynamic forces comprising a support assembly having a socket that at least partially encircles the structural member, an attachment for securing the support assembly to a positioned structure, such as an offshore platform, and a sleeve received in the socket, the sleeve being disposed in surrounding relationship to the structural member and comprising an electrically nonconductive, fiber-reinforced polymer composite.

An improved process for successful and homogeneous incorporation of ruthenium and iridium into titanium and titanium alloy melts, ingots, and castings via traditional melting processes (e.g., VAR and cold-hearth) has been developed. This result is achieved through the use of low-melting point Ti-Ru or Ti&mdash;Ir binary master alloys within the general composition range of &lE;45 wt. % Ru and with a preferred composition of Ti-(15-40 wt. % Ru), or within the general composition range of &lE;61 wt. % Ir and with a preferred composition of TI-(20-58 wt. % Ir). Primary features are its lower melting point than pure titanium, lower density than pure Ru and Ir metals, and the ability to be readily processed into granular or powder forms.

Process for melting and casting ruthenium-containing or iridium-containing titanium alloys

A tubular body made of a first metal and having a box end and a connection end, the box end having an internally threaded portion and an internal cylindrical thread-free portion axially outward of the threaded portion, the tool joint further including an anti-fretting section, preferably in the form of a sleeve of a second metal that is snugly received in a counterbore formed in the box end, the sleeve having an internal cylindrical surface having a diameter substantially the same as the internal diameter of the cylindrical thread-free portion of the box end, the second metal having a modulus of elasticity less than the modulus of elasticity of the first metal, the invention further including a drill pipe made by affixing first and second tool joints as described above to first and second opposed ends, respectively, of an elongate pipe body, the pipe body being affixed to the tool joints by a threaded shrink-grip connection, the first tool joint forming a box connection, the second tool joint forming a pin connection.

A cost effective process is provided for the production of a clad reactive metal plate composite that contains a complete metallurgical bond between a reactive metal or metal alloy backer plate and the cladding layer which is employed in the present invention as the cladding plate. The full metallurgical bond is achieved in the present invention by maintaining a small gap between the cladding plate and the backer plate in the composite assembly. The small gap, which optionally may contain a evacuation nipple, may be obtained by placing shims composed of the backer plate material between the backer plate and the cladding plate in the composite assembly prior to sealing and hot working the assembly. Also, provided is a highly corrosion resistant clad reactive metal plate composite which comprises a reactive metal or metal alloy cladding layer that is completely bonded to a reactive metal or metal alloy backer plate through a metallurgical bond.

The invention relates to a process for improving the aging response and uniformity in a beta titanium alloy comprising the steps of: (a) cold working said beta titanium alloy to at least about 5% so that a reasonable degree of recrystallization can be obtained during subsequent solution treatment; (b) pre-aging said cold worked alloy at about 900.degree. to about 1300.degree. F. for a time in excess of about 5 minutes to obtain a pre-aged alloy; (c) solution treating said pre-aged alloy at a time and temperature to achieve a reasonable degree of recrystallization of said pre-aged alloy above the beta transus; and (d) aging said solution treated alloy at temperature and times to achieve a pre-aged, solution treated and aged beta titanium alloy substantially in a state of metallurgical equilibrium.
