An electrical connector is made repairable by providing a front insert which is removable from and retained in the shell by an O-ring. The shell includes an undercut in which the O-ring is mounted, and the insert includes a circumferential elliptical groove. In use, as the insert assembly is inserted into the shell, the O-ring mounted on the undercut of the shell is compressed by the insert until it reaches the groove, whereupon it expands into the groove in a direction parallel to the direction of insertion, which constitutes the major axis of the elliptical profile of the groove, and thus provides positive retention and sealing without the need for additional retention mechanisms. Removal is facilitated by a removal tool which includes hooks extending from a front circumference of a sleeve of the removal tool. The hooks are inserted through slots in the insert and past a collar provided around the mating interface of the insert. The tool is then rotated a short distance to cause the hooks to engage a back surface of the collar, while a piston provides a biasing force to lock the insert against the connector during removal.

A modular electrical connector assembly includes a shell containing a plurality of separate bays, each bay being adapted to accept an EMI/EMP electrical connector insert or module. A unique latch structure enables each connector module to be easily removed from its bay to enable fast and easy replacement of defective modules or the EMI/EMP components contained therein.

Repairable connector

A connector assembly allows rear repair/replacement of first contacts so that circuit protection elements may be checked for damage or replaced. A pair of inserts each having a like array of passages extending between its end faces are disposed in a connector shell one insert being fixed and adapted to receive the first contacts and the other insert being removable and carrying in its passages a second contact to mate with a first contact. The first contact carries the circuit protection element and is removably mounted in the shell with one end thereof for mating with a second contact. Means including a coupling nut removably secure the removable insert to a rearward end portion of the shell. Means including a key/keyway on the shell/removable insert align the inserts so that each array of passages is aligned with one another.

An electrical connector has a removable dielectric insert sized to fit within the forward opening of the connector shell with internal threads in the shell being threadably engaged by an external threads on a locking nut threadably inserted into the shell to abut the insert. A retaining ring is snapped into an annular recess of the insert to captivate the nut on the insert and provide a surface to aid in retraction of the insert. The terminals are two piece with a rearward portion being nonremovably retained within the shell and the forward portion having a circuit component thereon which can be replaced when the insert is removed.

An electrical connector shell has a monolithic ceramic capacitor having active and ground electrodes for filtering contacts received in plated passages therethrough, and a grounding ring for grounding the contacts to the shell. A ceramic substrate is bonded to or extends integrally from a top face of the monolith, the substrate including a plated bore extending inwardly from its top surface, and a metal spring ring being disposed in the bore, each bore being axially aligned with one plated passage to complete an circuit path between the contact and the active electrodes and provided to eliminate stresses which could crack the fragile monolith. The grounding spring is characterized by a cylindrical metal annulus including angularly spaced foils at acute angles thereto, each foil being pivotably connected and completing a circuit path between the ground electrodes and the connector shell.

A fiber optic connector assembly incorporating the principles and features of this invention is characterized by an optically transparent window (3), hermetically sealed (6) within a main housing (1) passage (2), a member (30, 40) mounted on each side of the window (3) having axially aligned bores (31, 41) that axially align lenses (10, 20) and their respective optical fibers (81, 83) and a lens holder assembly (70) mounted within a second housing (50) that may be uncoupled from the main housing (1).
