The present invention provides a method of operating a telematics enabled mobile vehicle communication system. The method includes receiving a navigation request from a user interface to a telematics unit, receiving a location signal defining an approximate geographic location of the telematics unit to the telematics unit, analyzing the navigation request and the location signal to produce a navigation route defined by a plurality of navigation points including an initial navigation point and one or more additional navigation points, producing a local navigation zone and a global navigation zone based on the analyzed location signal wherein each navigation zone defines a geographic area concentrically radiating from a known geographic location, determining which navigation zone the initial navigation point is within, and producing navigation instructions that provide direction to navigation points along the navigation route and are based on the determined navigation zone and the navigation route.

System and method for zone based initial route guidance within a telematics equipped mobile vehicle

A demonstration method and module for demonstrating various features of a vehicle navigation system without activating the system at a back-end facility, such as a remote call center. The demonstration module comes with a variety of pre-established navigation demonstrations, each of which is designed for a particular geographic area. The demonstration module obtains a vehicle position reading from the vehicle navigation system, and then utilizes this reading to select the most appropriate demonstration experience for that area. The selected navigation demonstration is then played through one or more output devices in the vehicle, such as speakers and a graphical display. This enables a prospective customer to experience a local or familiar navigation demonstration, without taking the steps and incurring the expenses associated with activating the vehicle navigation system at the call center.

A device for implementing a method of remotely routing a voice call forward to a telematic device is disclosed. The device first maintains a call state of the voice call in response to an answering of call forwarding rings by the telematic device. The device then forwards the calls to the next assigned device in response to a failure of a user of the telematic device to answer fake rings from the telematic device. Such a failure can be indicated by a monitoring of a prescribed number of back ring tones or a dropping of call within a prescribed timer window.

The invention provides a method of transitioning between voice and data communications with a mobile vehicle. A switch-to-voice command signal is sent from a call center modem pool to the mobile vehicle, and a vehicle switch-to-voice acknowledgement signal is received at the call center. A call from the call center modem pool is switched to a call center advisor in response to the vehicle switch-to-voice acknowledgement signal.

The invention provides a method of selecting a modem carrier type for data transmission over a wireless communication system. The invention provides a method for accessing a quiescent mobile vehicle using a wireless communication system. A vehicle communication device is placed into a discontinuous-receive mode. A determination is made whether a short message service communication is waiting to be delivered during the service-ready mode. A short message service communication is received in response to the short message service communication determination, and an operation is performed based on the received short message service communication.

Method and system for communicating with a quiescent mobile vehicle

The present invention provides a method of accessing a mobile vehicle using a wireless communication system. A vehicle communication device is placed into a first communication service sleep mode of a sleep cycle. It is determined if a first communication service is currently available to the vehicle communication device. If the first communication service is available, the vehicle communication device remains in a first communication service awake mode for a first interval of the sleep cycle. If the first communication service is not available, the vehicle communication device remains in the first communication service sleep mode for the first interval of the sleep cycle. Programs and systems of using the method are also provided.
