Copper compositions that are useful as hydrogenation catalysts are disclosed. In particular, the copper compounds are catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of oils that contain unsaturated fatty acyl components such as unsaturated vegetable oils. Methods of preparing the copper compositions are also disclosed. Methods of hydrogenating unsaturated compositions that contain at least two sites of unsaturation using the hydrogenation catalysts, along with products obtained from the hydrogenation reactions described herein are also disclosed.

Hydrogenation with copper compositions catalyst

A process for the hydrogenation of a polyunsaturated oil, wherein said oil is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a copper-chromium containing catalyst at a temperature of from about 200 to 300&deg; C. and a pressure of from about 300 to 500 psig, for 3-8 hours. The reaction results in a product having a monounsaturated fatty acid percent conversion (i.e., monounsaturated fatty acid content) of from about 60-90%, preferably from about 70-90% and most preferably, from about 80-90%. The copper-chromium catalyst may also be recovered and reused without regeneration or further treatment prior to reuse.

A process for conjugating organic compounds containing methylene interrupted carbon-carbon double bonds comprising (a) contacting ruthenium trichloride hydrate and an organic solvent or carboxylic acid to form a first mixture, the organic solvent or carboxylic acid being present in an amount sufficient to solubilize the ruthenium trichloride hydrate, and (b) contacting the first mixture with an organic compound containing methylene interrupted carbon-carbon double bonds at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient time to conjugate the organic compound containing methylene interrupted carbon-carbon double bonds; wherein the ruthenium in the ruthenium trichloride hydrate in (b) is present in an amount of about 5 ppm to about 100 ppm based on the weight of the organic compound containing methylene interrupted carbon-carbon double bonds.

A process for treating a first oil containing antioxidant compounds selected from tocopherols, tocotrienols, sterols, or mixtures thereof comprising contacting the first oil with an effective amount of at least one compound under suitable reaction conditions to esterify at least about 50% of the antioxidant compounds to produce a second oil containing esters of the antioxidant compounds, the second oil and oil-based coatings or inks produced therefrom having reduced yellowing and improved drying property.

Process for treating oils containing antioxidant compounds

A process uses a water repellant material in order to enhance the water resistance of composite. The process begins with a saturated vegetable or animal fat triglyceride having a low iodine value. The triglyceride is melted to form a sprayable liquid. The sprayable triglyceride and a bonding agent are applied to the fibrous materials, preparatory to a press binding. Then, the sprayed fibrous material is subjected to a hot press cycle in order to form a bonded fibrous composition. The low Iodine Value triglyceride may be selected from a group including hydrogenated vegetable oil, palm oil, stearine, winterized low IV fractions, soy stearine, animal fat, hydrogenated animal fat, and fractionated fats or blends of these materials.

A method of enhancing water resistance of composites uses a water repellant material which may be applied toward and other fibrous vegetable materials. The method begins with a saturated vegetable or animal fat triglyceride having a low iodine value. The triglyceride is rendered in a form which may be a fine powder, an emulsion, or a dispersion in a liquid. The sprayable triglyceride and a bonding agent are applied to the fibrous materials, preparatory to a press binding. There, the sprayed material is subjected to a hot press cycle in order to form a bonded fibrous composition. The low Iodine Value triglyceride may be selected from a group including hydrogenated vegetable oil, palm oil, stearine, winterized low IV fractions, soy stearine, animal fat, hydrogenated animal fat, and fractionated fats or blends of these materials.

The invention provides an adhesive system comprising a blend of resin and a co-adhesive conjugated triglyceride drying oil acting as a internal release agent which is mixed with fibers for bonding composite panels such as oriented strand board, particle board, plywood, MDF, hardboard, and similar panels. The resin is a fast acting bonding material which forms a mat of fibers into a self sustaining panel within a time limit during which a press may be economically utilized. The triglyceride acts slower so that, after the panel is formed, there is enough time to penetrate the fibers to a depth that results in a superior bonding. The conjugated drying oil is a release agent that provides an internal release agent that prevents the composite panel from sticking to the press that bonds it.

Co-adhesive system for bonding wood, fibers, or agriculture based

The invention provides a method of conjugating double bonded drying oil so that a relatively low cost linseed oil, for example, can replace the more expensive, naturally conjugated tung oil which has been used heretofore. The conjugation is brought about by the use of ruthenium as a catalyst, with formic or a similar acid providing a synergistic augmentation of the reaction. The conjugated oil may have many uses, but a major object is to provide a way to enhance a phenolic resin adhesive used on wood and wood products.

A system monitors the stability of fats and oils especially having the capacity of simultaneous analysis of a multitude of samples making it convenient for use to monitor a production plant. A plurality of probes (made from a metal taken from a group consisting of nickel, chromium, rhodium, titanium and stainless steel) have spaced parallel electrodes immersed in a liquid carrier (deionized water) through which an effluent of heated fats or oils is bubbled. A common conductivity meter responds to signals from each of the probes, in turn, for measuring the induction time of the fats or oils samples. The instrument features a power failure recovery system that utilizes a battery-power clock, so that short duration power failures do not cause a loss of data. A long duration power failure does not cause loss of data to the point of failure, however incomplete analyses are stopped.

An infrared spectrum of the composition produced in selected wave length ranges is compared with those produced from standard samples. Applications include analysis of fructose and dextrose in corn syrups and determination of Dextrose Equivalent (D.E.) of corn syrups.
