Method and apparatus for trimming and inspecting plastic containers

A liquid dispensing package includes a container whose finish has an opposed pair of slots extending vertically from a free end thereof. A nozzle element with a dispensing passage extending therethrough is positioned within the finish and has an opposed pair of pins which extend into and through the slots of the finish to permit the nozzle element to translate, but not rotate, with respect to the finish, the translation being between a sealed, non-dispensing position and an unsealed, dispensing position. A cap element is rotatably affixed to the finish and has an opening in a top central panel which is aligned with the dispensing passage of the nozzle element. A skirt of the cap element has part helical grooves on its inside surface, and these grooves receive the free ends of the pins of the nozzle element. Thus, rotation of the cap element results in translation of the nozzle element. The opening of the central panel of the cap element has a frangible portion which is ruptured by contact with a boss at a free end of the nozzle element upon the first opening or attempted opening of the package to provide the package with tamper evident opening characteristics.

A method and apparatus for positioning and indexing molded hollow plastic articles for trimming molded hollow plastic articles having flash and a finish for a closure wherein the articles are supported and moved in succession by a vacuum conveyor which holds the articles in upright position and moves them past successive stations for deflashing, facing, inspection, rejection and unloading. The conveyor is a chain slat conveyor having longitudinally spaced vertical holes that communicate with a vacuum chamber over which the conveyor is trained. The conveyor is driven intermittently and moves the articles in succession past each of the stations. At the load station, the articles are oriented so that they are in proper alignment and relationship to the openings in the conveyor.

A method and apparatus for placement of labels within the blow molds of an injection blow molding machine. The injection blow molding machine comprising a turret having plurality of circumferentially spaced surfaces, each of which supports a plurality of spaced core rods, a plurality of injection molds at an injection molding station for forming a plurality of preforms, and a plurality of blow mold sections at a blow molding station which close about the preforms so that the preforms can be blown outwardly against the confines of the mold to form hollow plastic articles. The blow molds include movable bases exposing the interior of the blow molds when the blow molds are closed about preforms on the core rods. A positioning apparatus positions a plurality of labels at the blowing station and a plurality of cylindrical vacuum mandrels are rotated to pick-up the labels and thereafter the mandrels are translated to deliver the labels to the blow molds through the open bottoms after which the mandrels are retracted, the mold bottoms are closed and the hollow articles are blown in the molds with the labels on the outer surfaces thereof.

In the making of hollow plastic articles wherein a label is positioned in each of a plurality of spaced partible molds in a predetermined array, a preform is positioned in each set of partible molds and the molds are closed and the preform is blown outwardly to the confines of the mold to apply the label to the resultant hollow plastic article, the apparatus for removing the labels from a conveyor and applying them to the open partible molds which comprises a vacuum head supported for movement between a position for picking up a label and a position for delivering a label to a partible mold. The head comprises an elongated body and a plurality of longitudinally spaced vacuum cups along the body. The body has a transverse cross sectional surface that generally conforms to the cross section of the internal surface of the mold to which the label is to be applied. The outer surface of the body is formed with a layer of resilient material with the vacuum cups projecting slightly beyond the outer surface of the layer.

Apparatus for applying labels in the molds of a plastic blow molding machine of the type wherein a plurality of sets of molds are mounted on a wheel rotatable about a horizontal axis and the molds are moved toward and away from one another to enclose a parison and the parison is then blown to the confines of the cavity between the mold sections which comprises removing labels successively from one or more magazines, depositing the labels on an endless conveyor which transports the labels to a position adjacent an open mold and laterally transferring the labels from the conveyor to a position within the molds such that when a mold closes about a plastic parison and the parison is blown, the labels become adhered to the blown plastic bottle.
