Tooling is held within the nose of a rotary punch and as the tool is rotated and forced against a workpiece a fastener within the tool becomes affixed to the workpiece. The tools have displacers which non-destructively deform and reshape the workpiece without any loss of workpiece material. The tools have various types of displacers including; tapered and arcuate displacers which act in concert to progressively act upon the workpiece; spherical displacers which may be fixed or rotatable such as caged ball bearings; and a full-circle displacer ring which wobbles as it presses against the workpiece. In the case of fixed spherical displacers, a multi-stroke method can be employed where the tool is rotated after each stroke in a group of installation strokes.

Rotary installation tools for clinch fasteners

A spin-pull blind insert tool utilizes a control system that generates a stop signal based on the relationship between the force values and the motion values derived from the action of the tool mandrel. The improved control system utilizes the shape of the force-deformation curve and not just a given pre-set force value or pull distance. Hence, the control system of the present invention does not require any set-up for changes in panel thickness unless the mandrel is also changed to install a different thread size. This control system develops a force-deformation curve as the fastener is being installed. The stop signal is generated when a pre-set deformation point has been exceeded and the shape of the force curve can be characterized by either of two types. For either type, an algorithm is followed which establishes an optimum stopping point for the installation tool regardless of the panel thickness into which the blind rivet is being installed.

Method for installing blind threaded inserts

A threaded blind insert includes a shank with an axial bore therethrough having a head at one end and a threaded region of the bore at the opposite end. The wall of the shank between its outer surface and the bore includes a weakened deformable portion created by a reduced outside diameter of the shank in that area. A reinforcement collar integral with the shank is located at approximately the middle of the deformable portion of the shank thus providing a more rigid area at the collar which creates bulges in the deformable portion on either side of the collar when the insert is compressed. A flange located adjacent the underside of the head of the insert has an outer diameter greater than the shank but less than the head. When fitted into a mounting hole of a workpiece, the flange centers the insert and provides an annular gap between the shank and the mounting hole. As the insert is compressed by an installation tool, the bulges provide a reactive force against the backside of the workpiece which clamps the workpiece between the bulges and the head of the insert. Reaction forces of the bulges are sufficient to embed the head into the panel completely so that the installation provides a flush attachment. Alternately, the reinforcement collar may be replaced by a band of greater hardness on the deformable wall which can be created by heat treatment.

Clinch-type blind nut

An electrical connector panel incorporates a self-clinching type standoff fastener which is installed through mounting holes in the panel from the inside out. The fasteners include a knurled head sized so that excessive bulging of the metal around the panel D-shaped cutout does not develop when pressed into the panel. The head of the fastener is preferably installed flush with the inside of the panel to which the receptacle portion of the cable connector is fastened. With this construction, changes in panel thickness from one application to another will not alter the prescribed distance between the flanges of the mating cable plug and receptacle. Hence, an individual standoff part may be used for many different applications without the need for additional loose hardware.

Electrical connector panel

A point of operation safety device for hydraulic or pneumatic presses. The safety device includes a probe which descends by gravity toward the work area when the operator initiates the cycle. If during the descent of the probe no obstruction is encountered and the probe sufficiently enters the work area, a limit switch is automatically closed by the probe shaft to energize the control circuit of the press. Switch means are provided for retracting the ram of the press if the operator pushes up on the probe after the cycle has started. Relay means are provided to prevent the press from recycling at the end of one cycle, unless the operator again closes the circuit of the safety device. Further, a box construction is provided to jam the probe assembly to prevent initiation of the cycle when the cover to the box which houses the safety device is in the open position.
