This invention relates to resins useful for drainage in papermaking and the process of making paper using the resins. In particular the invention relates to glyoxalated copolymers of acrylamide containing significant amounts of cationic comonomer.

Reactive cationic resins for use as dry and wet strength agents in sulfite ion-containing papermaking systems

The disclosure relates to an adhesive composition for bonding lignocellulosic substrates. The adhesive composition contains a crosslinker and a non-urea diluent where the non-urea diluent is present in an amount from about 0.01 to about 75 weight % based on the total wet weight of the composition and where the crosslinker contains essentially no formaldehyde. Also disclosed is the adhesive further containing. an aqueous mixture of a protein source. The disclosure also relates to a process for making lignocellulosic composites utilizing the disclosed adhesive composition and to the lignocellulosic composites made using the disclosed process.

Diluents for crosslinker-containing adhesive compositions

Several Michael addition adducts of vinylamines with &#x3b1;,&#x3b2;. -unsaturated alkyl carbonyl compounds including amides, esters and acids, particularly acrylamide are presented. Additionally, a process for producing these Michael addition adducts is described. These adducts are generally useful in the manufacture of paper and are particularly useful as dry strength additives to make paperboard products using a papermaking machine.

This invention relates to resins useful for imparting strength to paper, the process of incorporating these resins into paper and the paper produced containing the resins. In particular the invention relates to resins useful for imparting dry-strength and wet-strength to paper under conditions of high sulfite ion concentrations.

The present invention contemplates poly(aminoamide) pre-polymers, polyamide polymers, a multi-step process for the synthesis of these pre-polymers and polymers using acrylates and at least one monomer containing at least two primary amines, and the resins resulting from the reaction of the polymers with an epihalohydrin. These resins may be used as wet strength resins and creping aids in the papermaking industry as well as surface additives for wool.

Methyl acrylate-diamine based polyamide resins and processes for producing the same

A paper composition comprising: at least one cationic thermosetting resin comprising the reaction product of (i) at least one polyamide having secondary amine groups made from reactants comprising at least one polyalkylene polyamine, an acid component comprising succinic acid and optionally at least one dicarboxylic acid (other than succinic acid), and (ii) epihalohydrin. The paper is capable of being repulped substantially faster than paper that is substantially the same except that it contains conventional wet strngth resin.

A process for making paper with increased wet and dry strength by incorporating into the pulp suspension an ionic thermosettable resin which is the reaction product of dialdehyde and epihalohydrin, or epihalohydrin equivalent, with a copolymer containing monomer units derived by polymerization of monomers comprising acrylamide or alkyl-substituted acrylamide and diallylamine or an acid salt thereof. The paper has wet and dry strength greater than that of paper not containing the resin and has a higher repulpability index than wet strength paper that is essentially the same but contains conventional polyazetidinium ion containing wet strength resin instead of the ionic thermosettable resin.

This invention is directed to a process for preparing an aqueous papermaking suspension containing a polyelectrolyte complex comprising providing an aqueous suspension of pulp fibers containing a water-soluble cationic polymer and a water-soluble anionic polymer that are reactable in the aqueous suspension to form the polyelectrolyte complex, and a multivalent cation having at least a &plus;3 charge, and forming the polyelectrolyte complex. It also includes the process wherein the aqueous suspension of pulp fibers contains surface active carboxyl compounds and water-soluble anionic compounds. It further includes the process wherein the aqueous papermaking suspension is sheeted and dried to obtain paper of improved strength.

Process for repulping paper comprising providing paper comprising thermosetting resin which is the reaction product of epihalohydrin and polyamide made from polyalkylene polyamine, succinic acid and optionally another dicarboxylic acid and repulping the paper to obtain recycled pulp fibers.

Process for repulping wet strength paper having cationic thermosetting resin

An ionic thermosettable resin useful for imparting wet and dry strength to paper is made by: (a) providing a copolymer comprising monomer units derived by copolymerization of acrylamide or alkyl-substituted acrylamide and diallylamine or an acid salt thereof; and (b) reacting the copolymer with epihalohydrin or epihalohydrin equivalent and dialdehyde. Paper products made using the resin are more easily repulped than paper products made with conventional wet strength resins.

Strength resins for paper and repulpable wet and dry strength paper made

The invention provides a novel poly(aminoamideureylene) resin and a process for making the resin without epichlorohydrin. The resin useful for improving wet strength of paper and paperboard intermediates. The resin is formed by making a prepolymer by reacting a diaminoamine, a dicarboxylic acid, and urea, allylating the prepolymer, and then reacting with hypohalous acid to produce an allylated quaternized poly(aminoamideureylene) having halohydrin substituents with resort to using epichlorohydrin. The resin can be activated for use in a papermaking process by treatment with a caustic (alkaline) agent. Optionally, the resin can be cross-linked prior to activation by heating in the presence of a caustic agent. The invention also provides an improvement in making polymers having halohydrin substituents formed by reacting an allylated polymer with hypohalous acid wherein the reaction is conducted without control of the pH. This invention also provides a method for producing hypohalous acid by acidifying an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hypohalite.
