A thermal management system for an electrified vehicle and a method for managing such a system, includes a coolant subsystem to cool a battery pack and a refrigerant subsystem. The coolant subsystem includes a battery chiller in fluid communication with a cooling system inlet to the battery pack. The refrigerant subsystem includes a chiller cooling subsystem to cool the battery chiller and a cabin cooling subsystem to cool a passenger cabin, wherein the chiller cooling subsystem and the cabin cooling subsystem are completely separate from each other.

Thermal management for electrified vehicle

Methods and systems are provided for a cooling arrangement. In one example, a system comprises a separator arranged in a block coolant jacket. The separator fluidly separates an upper portion of the block coolant jacket from a lower portion of the block coolant jacket.

Methods and systems for cooling arrangement

This disclosure details thermal management systems for thermally managing battery packs and other electric drive components of electrified vehicles. An exemplary thermal management system may include a battery cooling circuit and an e-drive cooling circuit. The e-drive cooling circuit may be fluidly connected to the battery cooling circuit by a combination of valves and coolant lines during or in anticipation of certain vehicle conditions, such as high load operating conditions, to augment cooling of electric drive components during the high load operating conditions.

Electrified vehicle thermal management systems with combinable battery pack and electric drive component cooling circuits

A thermal management system for an electrified vehicle and a method for managing such a system, according to an exemplary aspect of the present disclosure includes, among other things, a first cooling circuit, a second cooling circuit, and a third cooling circuit. The first cooling circuit cools a battery pack and includes a battery chiller in fluid communication with a cooling system inlet to the battery pack. The second cooling circuit cools the battery chiller and includes at least a first compressor and a first condenser in fluid communication with the battery chiller. The third cooling circuit cools a passenger cabin and includes at least a second compressor and a second condenser, and wherein the third cooling circuit is independent of the second cooling circuit.

A cooling and heating system for a motor vehicle comprises a heat pump, a controller, a low temperature radiator in thermal communication with the heat pump, a passenger cabin heat exchanger in thermal communication with the heat pump, and a defrost system comprising a bypass coolant loop in selective fluid communication with the low temperature radiator. When in the heating mode, the controller opens a solenoid valve and activates a coolant heater in the bypass coolant loop upon detecting operation of the heat pump outside of a predetermined normal operating range and upon detecting an ambient temperature below a predetermined temperature. The controller de-activates the coolant heater upon detecting operation of the heat pump within the predetermined normal operating range. The controller may also de-activate close the solenoid upon detecting operation of the heat pump within the predetermined normal operating range.

Methods and systems are provided for a pre-chamber. In one example, a system comprises flowing a mixture of coolants to a coolant chamber of the pre-chamber. Additionally or alternatively, only one coolant may be directed to the coolant chamber during some conditions.

Systems and methods for engine pre-chamber coolant flow

A valve directs fluid flow received from a device to one of a heater and a cooler. The valve includes a spool movably disposed in the housing between a first, second, and third position. An actuator is in fluid communication with the fluid. The actuator includes a smart material that deactivates when the fluid temperature is no greater than a first temperature, partially activated when the fluid temperature is greater than the first temperature, and fully activated when the fluid temperature is at least equal to a second temperature. The spool moves to the first position when deactivated and fluid flows from the cavity, to the heater. The spool moves to the second position when partially activated to prevent fluid from flowing to each of the heater and the cooler. The spool moves to the third position when fully activated and fluid flows from the cavity, to the cooler.

Valve configured regulating the flow of fluid between a device, a heater, and a cooler

A transmission fluid circuit for regulating the flow of a fluid includes a transmission, a cooler, and a valve. The valve includes a housing, a spool, and an actuator including a smart material. The spool is movable inside the housing between a first position and a second position. The smart material is configured to be in an activated state in response to the fluid exhibiting at least a first temperature and to be in a deactivated state in response to the fluid being a sufficient number of degrees less than the first temperature. The fluid flows from the housing to the transmission and from the transmission to the housing when the spool is in the first position. The fluid flows from the housing to the cooler, from the cooler to the transmission, and from the transmission to the housing when the spool is in the second position.

Thermal bypass valve using shape memory alloys

A fluid circuit includes a device, a cooler, and a valve. The valve includes a housing, a sealing member, a biasing device, and an actuator. The sealing member moves inside the housing between a first position and a second position. The actuator includes a smart material that is activated when the temperature of a fluid inside the housing exhibiting at least a first temperature, causing the sealing member to move to the second position. The smart material is deactivated when the fluid is a sufficient number of degrees less than the first temperature, causing the sealing member to move to the first position. The fluid flows from the housing to the device and then to the housing when the sealing member is in the first position. The fluid flows from the housing to the cooler and then to the device when the sealing member is in the second position.
