A cable connection assembly including an enclosure which houses a plurality of cable connection modules, each having a frame structure, a plurality of receptacles and a housing. The receptacles are mounted through a first frame wall and a housing structure is connected to the frame structure to enclose a portion of each receptacle extending from one side of the wall. In operation, a first cable is located to one side of the wall and connected to one of the receptacles and a second cable is located to the opposite side of the wall and connected to the same receptacle to interconnect the cables.

Cable connection assembly

The present invention provides a sealed enclosure which houses fiber optic cable in a manner accepted in the field. The sealed enclosure for a cable includes a floor surface, the floor surface having a discontinuous periphery defining at least one opening in the floor surface, the at least one opening defining a pass through in the floor surface. Upstanding side and back walls extend from the floor surface, and a ceiling surface joins with the side and back walls opposite to the floor surface. At least one door is mounted to a front of the enclosure and against corresponding edges of the floor surface, side walls, and ceiling surface. A sealing assembly is positioned over the at least one opening in the floor surface to seal the enclosure from the external environment upon insertion of the cable within the enclosure.

A cable management rack (10) for supporting and routing pluralities of fiber optic cables (24) to and from optical interconnection sites of stacks of interconnection enclosures (22). First brackets (40) along end frame members (14) enable securing of the cables routed vertically, and also support removable rack cover panels (18). Second brackets (70,70A, 90) include arcuate cable support surfaces (72) for routing selected cables 90.degree. (or 180.degree.) about bends having radiuses great enough to protect the optical fibers of the cables. The second brackets (70,70A, 90) are removably affixable to the end frame members (14) or to intermediate frame members (16) at any location along a columnar array of fastening sites (34) beside the enclosure stacks, to correspond to any desired location of a cable bend, with the rack thus being modular. Relay brackets (110) provide for excess cable take-up.

A strain relieving holder (40) having a bottom member (42) with channels (48) therealong, and top members (44,46) securable to said bottom member (42) by lugs (68) thereof being received into and held within respective channels (48). Either channels (48) of the bottom member (42) or channels (114) of the top members (44,46) may receive jacketed cable (28) thereinto for strain relief holding thereof. Slots (66) of the bottom member (42) are dimensioned to receive ribbon cables (32) (or buffered fibers 26) therein, and the top members (44,46) secure the ribbon cables (32) in the slots. Holders (40) may be used at ends of fiber optic splice trays (10).

An optical fiber splice tray rack and cabinet for holding optical fiber splice trays that enclose splices in optical fibers. The splice tray rack has shelves attached to a back panel, each shelf has a support surface extending from the back panel to a lip that projects from the support surface opposite the back panel to define a tray receiving region for receiving one of the splice trays, and a resilient member that acts generally parallel to the support surface of each shelf for holding the splice tray within the tray receiving region. The box-like cabinet has sides defining a cabinet interior and a tie-down bar attached to the cabinet within the cabinet interior for individually securing the protective outer jacket, the inner jacket and the strength member thereto.

A pedestal (10) for interconnection of fiber optic members (54) of fiber optic cable articles such as cables (52), and especially where the cables have been inserted through routing tubes (36). Routing tubes (36) are secured using arrays of tube holders (30) at several locations, defining routing regions within pedestal (10) along each side of a centrally located fiber splicing region (28). Each tube holder includes a pair of rigid support members (72,74) coextending from a mounting bracket (70) in parallel spaced apart from each other to define a tube receiving slot (66), with elastically compressible inserts (80,82) secured to each rigid support member and spaced slightly from each other along the tube receiving slot (66). The rigid support members (72,74) are latchable together at the entrance of the slot upon insertion of the tubes (36) thereinto. The inserts (80,82) are of a material compressible upon placement of the tubes into the slot (66), enabling each routing tube (36) to be gripped therebetween with sufficient force to assuredly hold it in place even when other routing tubes are being inserted into or removed from the slot (66), without deforming the flexible tubes (36) which would interfere with blowing the fiber optic cables through the routing tubes.

A one-piece fiber optic receptacle (10) with integrally-molded containment cells (18,19) for frictionally retaining one or more active optical devices (20) within the receptacle (10) during alignment.

A fiber optic plug assembly (10) including resistance-fit cover-halves (12A and 12B) which are combinative to house both simplex plugs (20) and duplex plugs (not shown) to permit duplex data transmission to take place using simplex parts. The plug assembly (10) including the plugs (20) thereof may be quickly and easily connected and disconnected as desired.

A discrete fiber optic receptacle assembly (10) formed of an interlocking main section (30) and end panel section (20) within which one or more active optical devices (50) may be seated and enclosed. The active optical devices (50) are urged into alignment by insertion of the end panel section (20) into the interlocking main section (30), and pegs (22) become anchored in notches (38) to maintain the alignment by a secure resistance fit.

A self-aligning optical receptacle cover (10) suitable for use with various types of optical receptacles (20). The cover (10) seals the receptacle (20) against dust and debris, and alignment pylons (16, 18) extending from receptacle cover (10) cooperate with active optical devices (30, 40) to maintain precise alignment thereof within the receptacle during manufacturing operations.

An optical fiber connector 1 comprises, an optical fiber 3 and a flexible buffer 4 and multiple strength members 5 of an optical fiber cable 2, and a holder 8 imbedding the fiber 3 at a front end 9 of the holder 8, and imbedding the buffer 4 and the strength members 5 and an exterior of the cable 2 to provide a unitary connection to component parts of the cable 2.

An interconnect assembly 1 includes an adapter assembly 15, a coupling bushing 13 and an insert 14. The assembly 1 is situated within a wall outlet 2 having a hood assembly 4 with an aperature 8 for receiving therethrough a plug terminated optical fiber cable. The plug is received through the aperture 8 and interconnected by means of the interconnect assembly 1 with a second optical fiber cable. The assembly 1 comprises a receptacle housing 18 having at least one forward extending compartment structure 46, open at a front receiving face and a receptacle 17 within the housing 18 for receiving the first optical cable within the compartment structure 46 for connection to the plug terminating the first optical fiber cable. The assembly 1 further comprises an insert 13 with a guide port 56. The guide port 56 receives the forward extending compartment structure 46 of the receptacle housing 18 with the receptacle 17. The insert 13 further includes connecting means for securing the insert 13 to the hood assembly 4 of the wall outlet 2.

The end of an optical fiber connector 3 and fiber 8 end are protected by a fiber protector body 9 during bonding of the fiber optic cable 6 to the connector 3. The protector body 9 comprises an elongated protective sleeve section 73 with axial bore 74 and terminates in means 75 for securing the protective sleeve 73 to the optical fiber connector 3. The means 75 for securing the protective sleeve 73 comprises an alignment sleeve 76 having a bore 77 extending with the axial bore 74 of the elongated protective sleeve section 73. Further the means 75 has a least two resilient catch pieces 78 extending from the elongated protective sleeve 73 and having the form of cantilever arms extending parallel to and on opposing side of the longitudinal axis of the alignment sleeve 76. The catch pieces 78 terminate in extending protrusions 80 and lip structures 81.

An active device mount 1 comprises a base 2 having a forward face with a connecting means 3 for attaching an optical fiber connector. The connector has an alignment ferrule and an optical fiber extending therethrough. The mount 1 has a rearward face with securing means 4 for an active device. The connecting means 3 comprises a front socket 17 extending therefrom the active device mount base 2 and has a longitudinal axis and axial bore 18. The connecting means 3 further comprises at least two resilient catch pieces 20 of cantilever form extending from the base 2 parallel to and on opposing sides of the longitudinal axis of the front socket 17. The resilient catch pieces 20 terminate in protrusions 22 and lip structures 23. The securing means 4 of the active device mount base 2 comprises a resilient, four sided, rhombic-shaped structure extending from the base 2 and encompassing the can 8 of the active device. The structure 4 secures the can 8 by press fit at four contact points 16 between the four inner surfaces 15 of the sides of the structure 4 and the surface of the can 8.

An overconnector assembly 10 converts a pair of simplex optical fiber connectors 1, each having a defined exterior profile, into a unitary structure that operates as a duplex connector. The overconnector assembly 10 comprises a bipartite structure of complementary parts 76, 77. Each part has a double compartment interior 78, 79. The interior of each compartment 78, 79 has a precisely shaped profile conforming to the shape of the defined exterior profile of each of the pairs of simplex optical fiber connectors 1.
