An integrated protection unit is a circuit breaker which includes basic overcurrent protection facility along with selective electrical accessories. A molded plastic accessory access cover secured to the integrated protection unit cover protects the accessory components contained within the integrated protection unit cover from the environment. A combined overcurrent trip actuator and multiple accessory unit is either field-installed or factory-installed within the integrated protection unit. One such actuator-accessory unit includes a fast release overcurrent trip circuit.

A two pole ground fault circuit breaker is provided by the attachment of a power supply module and a second single pole circuit breaker module to a completely assembled single pole ground fault circuit breaker. Electrical interconnection between the signal processor circuit within the single pole ground fault circuit breaker module and the second pole is made by a first pair of conductors. Interconnection between the power supply module and the single pole within the ground fault circuit breaker is provided by a separate pair of conductors.

A zone selective interlock module is interposed between a pair of upstream and downstream static trip circuit breakers for controlling the short-time and ground fault zone selective interlock functions of the breakers. When a signal is received from a downstream static trip breaker, the module transmits a low-level interlock signal to a static trip breaker upstream. The interlock signal, in turn, activates the programmer circuit of the upstream breaker causing a shift in the upstream programmer time delay characteristics. The module also provides an energy storage feature to ensure the integrity of the interlock function in the event that the control power is lost upon the occurrence of a fault.

A control circuit utilizes a system voltage monitoring control relay for applying a DC control voltage across a UVR solenoid and a voltage dropping resistor to maintain the UVR in its reset condition in the absence of an undervoltage condition. An RC network maintains the UVR reset condition for momentary dips in the system voltage. If the UVR does drop out to trip its circuit breaker, a second relay temporarily switches out the dropping resistor to render the control voltage capable of electromagnetically resetting the UVR. To accommodate drawout breaker applications, means is provided to sense when the UVR is reconnected to the control circuit pursuant to automatically initiating a UVR reset function via the second relay.

A plunger is normally held in a retracted, non-indicating position by a permanent magnet against the force of a spring biasing the plunger to an extended, indicating position protruding through an indicator cap. An electromagnet is selectively energized to develop flux in opposition to the magnet holding flux, whereupon the plunger pops to its indicating position. The cap internally mounts a pair of contacts which are bridged by a plunger mounted shorting ring incident with the plunger assuming its indicating position, thereby completing an external electrical indication circuit.

DC control voltage derived from the system voltage activates a first relay to apply the control voltage across a dropping resistor and an undervoltage release (UVR) solenoid, thereby holding the UVR solenoid in while the system voltage remains above a minimum level. An energy storage RC network holds the UVR solenoid in for momentary drops in system voltage. In the event of a protracted system undervoltage condition, the first relay drops out to drop out the UVR solenoid and trip a system circuit breaker. When nominal system voltage is restored, the control voltage activates the first relay and, via an RC charging circuit, temporarily actuates a second relay to switch out the dropping resistor, thereby temporarily applying full control voltage across the UVR solenoid to reset it.

A circuit breaker motor operator control circuit utilizes the voltage developed across a dynamic braking resistor during breaking of a permanent magnet DC motor to prevent re-energization of the motor until it has been braked to a virtual stop. The control circuit also includes a timing network operating to prevent continued pumping of the breaker operating mechanism by the motor operator should the operating mechanism for some reason fail to become charged within a prescribed time period.

A control circuit controls AC energization of a universal, series wound AC motor in a circuit breaker motor operator to power a breaker charging cycle. At the end of a charging cycle, the motor field winding remains energized from the AC source, however a braking resistor is switched across the de-energized motor armature to achieve dynamic braking. A timing circuit operates in the dual capacity of controlling dynamic motor braking and preventing continued running of the motor operator should the breaker operating mechanism fail to reset during a charging cycle.

A high current field test set is electrically connected to pass test currents of overcurrent proportions through a single pole of a multipole static trip circuit breaker. The normal electrical connections between the breaker phase and neutral current sensing transformers and the static trip unit are made via a ground fault defeat cable which serves to automatically route the phase current monitoring signals produced by the test currents and fed to the appropriate trip unit phase overcurrent signal processing network through two primary windings of the ground fault sensing differential current transformer in opposite directions, thereby inhibiting a ground fault trip function.

A field test set for static trip circuit breakers is electrically connected to the static trip unit and to the circuit breaker trip coil and phase current sensor transformers. The test set, powered from a low voltage source, is equipped to shunt feed the trip unit power supply, bringing the trip unit up to power preparatory to the injection of selected levels of overcurrent and ground fault simulating test signal current for verifying the time-current characteristics and current pickup calibrations of the various trip functions of the trip unit. A lockout circuit automatically terminates a test signal current whose magnitude and duration represents potential harm to the trip unit. The test set is also equipped to test the trip coil energization level developed by the trip unit and also the continuity of the breaker current transformers.
