A process for preparing a curing composition of a coordination complex comprising methylenedianiline (MDA) and a salt, and less than 1000 of free MDA. The curing composition may be used in curing polyurethanes and epoxy resins.

Curing compositions having low-free amounts of methylenedianiline

Plasticizer free curing compositions comprising small particle size complexes of methylenedianiline and an alkali salt, e.g. a 3:1 coordination complex of MDA/alkali salt, with average diameter 60 micron or less, often 20 micron or less, e.g., 10 microns or less, dispersed in a volatile, non-polar, organic solvent are prepared. Stable one pack urethane compositions comprising the plasticizer free curing compositions and polyurethane prepolymers are prepared, which exhibit excellent storage stability and overcome many of the drawbacks encountered when using MDA complexes dispersed in plasticizers such as high boiling aromatic and alkyl di-esters.

Plasticizer free curing composition

A method for preparing a polyurethane elastomer, the method comprising mixing an isocyanate terminated prepolymer and a nitrogen-containing organic salt to form a prepolymer mixture and reacting the prepolymer in the prepolymer mixture with a methylenedianiline metal salt coordination complex chain extender to form the polyurethane elastome. The nitrogen-containing organic salt is selected from the group consisting of an ammonium salt, an imidazolium salt, a pyridinium salt, a pyrrolidinium salt, a piperidinium salt, and a morpholinium salt.

Accelerated cure of isocyanate terminated prepolymers

A prepolymer mixture for preparing a polyurethane elastomer, the mixture comprising an isocyanate terminated prepolymer and a nitrogen-containing organic salt. The nitrogen-containing organic salt may be selected from the group consisting of an ammonium salt, an imidazolium salt, a pyridinium salt, a pyrrolidinium salt, a piperidinium salt, and a morpholinium salt.

In one aspect, the invention relates to storage-stable and flowable polyurethane compositions comprising (a) one or more isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymers derived from one or more hydrocarbon ring-containing diisocyanates and/or triisocyanates and one or more polyols; (b) one or more metal salt complexes of methylenedianiline; and (c) one or more organic acid halide compounds having one or more acid halide groups, wherein the one or more organic acid halide compounds are in an amount wherein the acid halide groups are present in a minimum concentration of about 100 parts per million by weight of the polyurethane prepolymer. In other aspects, the invention relates to methods for storing the curable polyurethane compositions, as well as methods for producing polyurethane elastomers.
