In the manufacture of pig-iron in a shaft furnace, a taphole is closed with hardened plugging compound during making of the iron and is opened for the tapping of the iron and then resealed. The resealing of the taphole comprises inserting hardenable plugging compound into the taphole and, before hardening thereof, driving a hollow tube into the plugging compound. The hollow tube has an open front end. The tube is pulled out at the next tapping. The use of a tube avoids disturbance of the plugging compound and creates a smoother taphole, leading to improved flow of liquid iron.

A shaft furnace with a steel outer shell and a refractory lining inside the shell, has a sealed tap hole structure comprising a steel sleeve fitted to the outer shell, a permanent lining inside the sleeve and a refractory sealing material within said permanent lining. To improve the gas-tightness of the tap hole structure, a metal closure plate having an opening at which the tap hole is to be formed, is located within the steel sleeve and has its periphery coupled gas-tightly to the sleeve. A metal closure sleeve is coupled gas-tightly to said closure plate around said opening thereof and extends outwardly from said closure plate. Means e.g. conductive bricks are provided for removing heat from the closure plate and the closure sleeve.

Shaft furnace

For measuring the weight of a load of a load-carrier of at least one vehicle, which load-carrier is supported by at least one spring unit on a mobile substructure of the vehicle, weighing apparatus is provided with means for measuring the elastic deformation of the spring unit or units under the load. The measuring means includes a reference object mounted on the load-carrier. To avoid vulnerable equipment on the vehicle and to improve information obtained, the measuring means includes electrical observation means for non-contact observation of the position of the reference object. The electrical observation means being free of the vehicle.
