Embodiments of systems and methods for power demand management are described herein. More specifically, embodiments comprise systems and methods for powering, controlling, and/or operating various types of controllable load for integration with power fluctuations from intermittent power generation plants, such as photovoltaic arrays and wind turbine farms.

Systems and methods for grid appliances

Generally, management of refrigerant in an evaporator of an HVAC chiller is described. Methods, systems, and apparatuses to manage refrigerant in an evaporator can include one or combination of the following approaches: (1) by use of a refrigerant displacement array to physically prevent refrigerant from residing where the array is positioned (2) by control of the interstitial velocity of refrigerant flow within the volume of the shell of an evaporator; (3) by a phase biased distribution of the refrigerant mixture, so that a gaseous portion is uniformly distributed into the evaporator shell, while liquid refrigerant and oil is distributed into the evaporator shell at a designated area; and (4) by preventing or reducing the occurrence of foaming inside the evaporator through anti-foaming surfaces, such as by the use of refrigerant phobic and lubricant phobic material(s). Refrigerant management can in turn improve the thermal performance and overall efficiency of the evaporator.

Refrigerant management in HVAC systems

Heat is recovered from a heat source to heat water to high temperatures. Apparatuses, systems and methods are described to heat water to a high temperature by using heat, such as may be considered in some instances as waste heat, recovered from a heat source. The methods, systems, and apparatuses described utilize low pressure refrigerant(s) as a fluid to provide a refrigeration cycle that utilizes a source of heat to heat water to a high temperature. The refrigeration cycle can be with or without a cascade cycle. The refrigerant cycle in some examples uses an oil free compressor.

Using heat recovered from heat source to obtain high temperature hot water

Oleophobic and/or philic surface(s) are utilized for oil separation, direction, and/or collection in a refrigeration system. Surfaces of component(s) of a refrigeration system (compressor, oil separator, evaporator, etc.) are produced to be oleophobic or philic. The oleophobic and/or philic surfaces are utilized to direct a flow path of oil within the refrigeration system or to prevent oil connection in an area. Refrigerant phobic and/or lubricant phobic material(s) also may be utilized to help promote separation of refrigerant vapor from refrigerant liquid and/or from oil in refrigeration systems.

Phobic/philic structures in refrigeration systems and liquid vapor separation in refrigeration systems

A refrigerant circuit is disclosed. The refrigerant circuit includes a compressor, a condenser, a first expansion device, an economizer, a second expansion device, and an evaporator fluidly connected. A working fluid flows through the refrigerant circuit. A bypass segment is fluidly connected to the refrigerant circuit. A portion of the working fluid is provided from the refrigerant circuit to the bypass segment from a location in the refrigerant circuit disposed between the condenser and the evaporator with respect to flow of the working fluid. The portion of the working fluid flows through the bypass segment in a flow enabled state and is provided to a location in the refrigerant circuit disposed between the economizer and the evaporator with respect to flow of the working fluid. A vortical flow is induced at the location in the refrigerant circuit disposed between the economizer and the evaporator.

Variable orifice for a chiller

Embodiments as disclosed herein are directed to a heat pump that employs at least two different refrigerants, each of which is optimized for either a cooling operation mode or a heating operation mode. The embodiments as disclosed herein can help increase the capacity and/or efficiency of a heat pump in both the cooling operation mode and the heating operation mode. In addition, the embodiments as disclosed herein may also eliminate the need for a ground source in a relatively low ambient temperature environment.

Heat pump

A shell-and-tube evaporator of a refrigerant system includes a refrigerant inlet distributor that traps a pocket of gaseous refrigerant to displace liquid refrigerant underneath the evaporator's tube bundle, thereby reducing the total charge of refrigerant in the evaporator. In some embodiments, the distributor comprises four sections interconnected by a central refrigerant feed line, which properly apportions the refrigerant to the four sections.

Gas trap distributor for an evaporator

A direct-fired generator for an absorption chiller includes an inner shell, in which combustion occurs, and an outer shell. The inner shell supports a tube bundle through which a first portion an absorption solution is conveyed. Combustion products makes a single pass across the tube bundle within the inner shell. Such construction minimizes the number of potential leak paths and facilitates leak testing of the generator at an intermediate stage of assembly. A flow distributor apportions solution flow to the tube bundle and to a second solution flow path which bypasses the tube bundle but which is likewise heated by the combustion occurring within the inner shell. The two solution flow paths converge after the solution flowing therethrough has been heated by the combustion occurring in the inner shell. A vapor separator disentrains solution in liquid form from vaporized solution before the vapor exits the generator.

Single-pass, direct-fired generator for an absorption chiller

An absorption apparatus for an absorption chiller includes a series of eliminator blades situated between a vaporizing chamber (e.g., a generator or an evaporator) and a devaporizing chamber (e.g., a condenser or an absorber). Each of the blades includes an upstream leg, a downstream leg and a deflection tab. With respect to the direction of vapor flowing from the vaporizing chamber to the devaporizing chamber, the upstream leg is at an upward incline and the downstream leg is at a downward incline. The deflection tab extends out over the downstream leg to create a concavity that helps prevent liquid in the devaporizing chamber from splashing back across the eliminator blade. In some embodiments, a tube support plate includes a series of holes for not only supporting the tube bundles of two heat exchangers but also for supporting the eliminator blades.
