A quad foil journal air bearing includes a journal sleeve having an inner circumference that defines an inner surface. A first foil assembly includes a first key coupled to the inner surface of the journal sleeve. The quad foil journal air bearing further includes a second foil assembly having a second key coupled to the inner surface of the journal sleeve.

Quad foil journal air bearing

A journal air bearing is provided. The bearing includes a top foil configured to receive the shaft, an intermediate foil disposed radially outboard the top foil, and a journal sleeve disposed radially outboard the intermediate foil. The intermediate foil defines a plurality of holes configured to act as a vent to communicate fluid to an increased supply area to an air film.

A hydrodynamic thrust bearing has an annular plate, a plurality of bearing foils, and a plurality of bumper foils. The annular plate has a first face and a second face opposite the first face. The bearing foils have an arcuate shape and are joined to the first face of the annular plate. The bumper foils have an arcuate and corrugated shape and are joined to the second face of the annular plate. A method of making a hydrodynamic thrust bearing includes joining the bearing and bumper foils to the annular plate with integrally-formed spacers in which each bumper foil corresponds to a bearing foil.

Thrust bearing assembly

Disclosed is a bearing sleeve for supporting a shaft of an air cycle machine. The bearing sleeve includes an outer diameter and an inner diameter. The outer diameter is within a range of 3.222 and 3.224 inches. Further included is a foil retaining cavity provided in the inner diameter of the sleeve. The foil retaining cavity includes a slot and first and second openings located at opposing axial ends of the slot. Each of the first and second openings include a small portion and a large portion having different axial lengths. A ratio of the combined axial lengths of the large portions to an axial length of the foil retaining cavity is within a range of 0.19:1 and 0.22:1.

Bearing sleeve

A hydrodynamic bearing is provided that includes an annular main foil having axially spaced inner and outer surfaces. Bump foils are supported circumferentially on the outer surface. Top foils are supported circumferentially on the inner surface opposite the bump foils. In one example, spacers are arranged between the top foils and the main foils. The spacers can be provided by chemically etching the main foil, in one example. The bump foils include first and second corrugated portions respectively providing first and second axially heights. The first axial height is less than the second axial height and is arranged at a leading edge of the bump foil relative to the direction of airflow across the hydrodynamic bearing.

Hydrodynamic bearing

A bearing foil assembly includes a top foil, an intermediate foil, and a bump foil. The bump foil is provided with corrugations at circumferentially spaced locations. The bump foil has an end that is bent radially outwardly from a center of the foil assembly. The top foil has a bent portion extending radially outwardly and adjacent to the bent end of the bump foil. A first radius of curvature is defined to a curved portion leading into the bent portion at a first end adjacent to the bent end. A second radius of curvature is defined at an end of the bent portion on an end opposed to the bent end. A ratio of the first radius of curvature to the second radius of curvature is between 0.6 and 10. A bearing assembly, a shaft sub-assembly, an air machine, and a method of assembling a bearing into an air machine are also disclosed.

Journal air bearing for small shaft diameters

Disclosed is a bearing sleeve for supporting a shaft of an air cycle machine. The bearing sleeve includes an outer diameter and an inner diameter. The outer diameter is within a range of 3.214 and 3.216 inches. Further included is a foil retaining cavity provided in the inner diameter of the sleeve. An example journal air bearing for a rotatable shaft of an air cycle machine includes a top foil configured to receive a rotatable shaft, and an intermediate foil radially outboard the top foil. A journal sleeve is radially outboard the intermediate foil. The top foil and the intermediate foil establish apertures configured to communicate fluid between a first position radially inboard the top foil and a second position radially outboard the intermediate foil.

Journal air bearing

A thrust bearing for a rotary machine includes first, second and third layers. The second layer includes a corrugated foil arranged between the first and third layers. The corrugated foil includes a wall having peaks engaging the first layer and valleys engaging the third layer. A depression is arranged in the wall between first and second peaks. The depression is spaced from the first and third layers. The first layer includes multiple arcuate top foils that are arranged adjacent to a thrust runner of a rotatable shaft. A corresponding number of arcuate corrugated foils may be used to support the top foils. The third layer, which is provided by an annular main plate, includes multiple arcuate spacers arranged circumferentially on the main plate. The spacers are generally aligned with a trailing edge of the top foils. The depressions decrease the stiffness of the bump foils. The spacers direct the axial load through the thrust bearing in a desired manner.

Bump foil hydrodynamic thrust bearing

A hydrodynamic fluid film journal bearing assembly includes a journal sleeve having a key slot formed therein in a substantially longitudinal direction, a bump foil wrapped in a substantially cylindrical shape adjacent to the journal sleeve and having a bent end portion engaged with the key slot, an intermediate foil wrapped in a substantially cylindrical shape adjacent to the bump foil, a top foil wrapped in a substantially cylindrical shape adjacent to the intermediate foil, a first top foil cutout window formed adjacent to the bent region, and a first end tab formed at a free end of the top foil. The first end tab is wrapped with the top foil in the substantially cylindrical shape of the top foil, and extends into the first top foil cutout window to reduce skewing. The top and intermediate foils are joined at a bent region that engages the key slot.

A hydrodynamic fluid film journal bearing system includes a journal sleeve and one or more hydrodynamic fluid film foils positioned at least partially within the journal sleeve. The journal sleeve defines an inner diameter surface, an outer diameter surface, a wall thickness between the inner and outer diameter surfaces, and opposite first and second ends. The wall thickness of the journal sleeve is reduced at a first region located between the first and second ends, and a chamfered region is formed on the outer diameter surface of the journal sleeve between the first o-ring land and the first end of the journal sleeve.

Weight reduction for journal air bearing

A diffuser is provided having a spaced apart shroud and backing plate. A diffuser vane is provided between the backing plate and shroud. The vane includes first and second sealing surfaces opposite from one another and adjacent to the backing plate and shroud. Leading and trailing surfaces are arranged opposite from one another and adjoin the first and second sealing surfaces. The first sealing surface includes a first protrusion extending therefrom approximate to the leading surface with a gap extending from the trailing surface to the first protrusion. The second surface includes a second protrusion extending therefrom proximate to the trailing surface with a second gap extending from the leading surface to the second protrusion. The surfaces provide four corners such that the protrusions are arranged on opposite corners from one another to create a pressure differential between the first and second sealing surfaces.

Variable area diffuser vane geometry

The top foil (12) of the hydrodynamic fluid film journal bearing (10) carries opposing tabs (23,25) at the side edges adjacent the free end (17) thereof and extends radially outward to fit adjacent to the side edges (19,21) of the intermediate foil 14 and the ends of the key 18 when rolled into a cylinder and inserted into the bore of sleeve (24) to prevent skewing of the top foil. In another embodiment skewing is prevented by incorporating opposing tabs (37,39,50,52) at the free ends (31,54) of the top foil (12a) and intermediate foil (14a) that project through predetermined sized slots (40,42) formed in the side edges (44,46) at the fixed end of intermediate slot (14a). The tabs overlie the side edges of the intermediate foil (14b) and bump foil (15) when rolled into a cylinder and prevent skewing and enhancing journal bearing performance.
