The present invention provides a method of luting a provisional prosthetic device to tooth structure using glass ionomer cement systems having reduced bulk shear adhesion. The invention also provides a kit for luting a prosthetic device to tooth structure. The kit contains at least three containers of glass ionomer luting cement compositions. The kit advantageously can be utilized for providing both a provisional and a permanent luting cement depending upon which components are admixed.

A disposable, single chamber ampule is initially provided with a single reactive component, with additional component or components added to the ampule immediately prior to use. The ampule is placed within a capsule, and the capsule is then secured in a holding mechanism of a dental amalgamator for mixing the ingredients. The ampule has flexible wall portions and may be compressed by finger pressure or by use of a dispenser in order to expel the mixed contents directly to an application site.

A flexible, disposable ampule is pre-dosed with a first ingredient, and a second ingredient is introduced into the ampule immediately before a mixing operation. The ampule conveniently fits within a rigid capsule adapted for use with a dental amalgamator which, when activated, thoroughly mixes the ingredients within the ampule. After the ingredients are mixed and the preparation is formed, the ampule is removed from the capsule and the preparation is dispensed by establishing an outlet opening and compressing the ampule between the distal phalange segments of a thumb and a finger.

A mixing apparatus includes a capsule having two or more segments which nay be uncoupled or opened for adding additional ingredients to a pre-dosed ingredient just prior to the mixing operation. The capsule includes a port which is brought into registration with a vacuum port and an adjacent passageway carried by an arm of a dental amalgamator when the capsule is mounted on the arms, and sealing engagement of the perimeter of the capsule port with the port carried by amalgamator arm enables the establishment of sub-atmospheric pressure conditions within the capsule during the mixing operation. Optionally, the ingredients are mixed in a disposable ampule carried within the capsule, and vacuum conditions are established both internally and externally of the ampule for preventing unintentional compression of the ampule. The apparatus is particularly useful for mixing materials which, after mixing, have a consistency ranging from a light cream to a thick, viscous paste.
