Glasses that can be chemically strengthened and are colored by transition metals. Most of the glasses are black, with some having high damage resistance and compressive surface layers having high compressive stress and depth of layer after ion exchange. These colored glasses do not require a post-forming heat treatment to produce color and are formable by fusions drawing, rolling, slot drawing, and float glass processes.

Embodiments are directed to glass articles which are resistant to UV photodarkening, the glass articles having a thickness &#x2264;1.3 mm and comprise UV absorbers such as Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Cu, Ce, Ge, Mo, Cr, Co and Ni, and combinations thereof, or alternatively comprising ZnO or SnO.

A glass ceramic precursor glass and a glass ceramic having low levels of rhodium and a method of controlling the amount of rhodium in such glasses and glass ceramics. The precursor glass and glass ceramic contain from about 1 ppm to about 10 ppm and, in certain embodiments, from about 1 ppm to about 6 ppm rhodium. The method of controlling of reducing rhodium dissolution from a rhodium-containing material such as, for example, an alloy into a glass melt comprises controlling and/or lowering the partial pressure of oxygen at the rhodium-containing vessel/glass interface by imposing a high humidity condition around the external (non-glass-contact) surface of the rhodium-containing material. The lower concentration of rhodium minimizes its coloring effect on the white color of the glass ceramic.

Glass ceramics having low rhodium levels

A strengthened glass article having a central tension that is below a threshold value above which the glass exhibits frangible behavior. The central tension varies non-linearly with the thickness of the glass. The glass article may be used as cover plates or windows for portable or mobile electronic devices such as cellular phones, music players, information terminal (IT) devices, including laptop computers, and the like.

Crystallizable glasses, glass-ceramics, IXable glass-ceramics, and IX glass-ceramics are disclosed. The glass-ceramics exhibit &#x3b2;-spodumene ss as the predominant crystalline phase. These glasses and glass-ceramics, in mole %, include: 62-75 SiO; 10.5-17 AlO; 5-13 LiO; 0-4 ZnO; 0-8 MgO; 2-5 TiO; 0-4 BO; 0-5 NaO; 0-4 KO; 0-2 ZrO; 0-7 PO; 0-0.3 FeO; 0-2 MnOx; and 0.05-0.2 SnO. Additionally, these glasses and glass-ceramics exhibit the following criteria:   Furthermore, the glass-ceramics exhibit an opacity &#x2267;about 85% over the wavelength range of 400-700 nm for an about 0.8 mm thickness and colors an observer angle of 10&#xb0; and a CIE illuminant F02 determined with specular reflectance included of a* between &#x2212;3 and +3, b* between &#x2212;6 and +6, and L* between 88 and 97.

White, opaque, &#x3b2;-spodumene/rutile glass-ceramic articles and methods for making the same

Crystallizable glasses, glass-ceramics, IXable glass-ceramics, and IX glass-ceramics are disclosed. The glass-ceramics exhibit &#x3b2;-spodumene ss as the predominant crystalline phase. The present invention relates to glass-ceramic materials, processes for making the same and articles comprising the same. The glass-ceramic material has a composition, by weight of the total composition, comprising 55-68% SiO; 18-24% AlO; 3.3-4.1% LiO; 1.5-4.0% ZnO; 1.5-5.0% MgO; 2-5% TiO; 0-2% ZrO; 0-5% BO; 0-8% PO; 0-2% NaO, 0-2% KO; and at least one component resulting from an effective amount of at least one fining agent; wherein: the total of BOand POis at least 1.5% by weight, the total of MgO and ZnO is at least about 3.5% by weight, the total of NaO and KO is less than about 3.0% by weight, the total of PO, BO, NaO and KO is less than about 11% by weight, the weight ratio of the sum total of NaO+KO to the sum total of PO+BO is less than about 0.5; advantageously the total of PO, BO, NaO and KO is less than about 9% by weight and the total of NaO ad KO is less than about 2% by weight; and more advantageously the total of PO, BO, NaO and KO is less than about 7% by weight and the total of NaO ad KO is less than about 1% by weight. The glass-ceramic material comprises &#x3b2;-spodumene solid solution as the predominant crystalline phase.

&#x3b2;-spodumene glass-ceramic materials and process for making the same

The present invention relates to glass, glass-ceramic materials, lamp reflectors and processes for making them. The glass material has a composition, by weight of the total composition, comprising 56-67% SiO; 9-22% AlO; 3.4-3.8% LiO; 1.8-2.6% ZnO; 1.5-2.5% MgO; 3.3-5% TiO; 0-2.5% ZrO; 1.5-3% BO; 0-6% PO; 0-0.6% F; less than 500 ppm Fe; and components resulting from effective amount of at least one refining agent. The glass-ceramic material of the present invention contains &#x3b2;-spodumene solid solution as the predominant crystalline phase, and can be obtained by proper thermal treatment of the glass-ceramic material.

The present invention relates to glass, glass-ceramic materials, lamp reflectors and processes for making them. The glass material has a composition, by weight of the total composition, comprising 56&#x2013;67% SiO; 9&#x2013;22% AlO; 3.4&#x2013;3.8% LiO; 1.8&#x2013;2.6% ZnO; 1.5&#x2013;2.5% MgO; 3.3&#x2013;5% TiO; 0&#x2013;2.5% ZrO; 1.5&#x2013;3% BO; 0&#x2013;6% PO; 0&#x2013;0.6% F; less than 500 ppm Fe; and components resulting from effective amount of at least one refining agent. The glass-ceramic material of the present invention contains &#x3b2;-spodumene solid solution as the predominant crystalline phase, and can be obtained by proper thermal treatment of the glass-ceramic material.
