The use of bis-amines to enhance the antimicrobial activity of pharmaceutical compositions is described. The bis-amines are particularly useful for enhancing the antimicrobial activity of aqueous ophthalmic compositions, such as artificial tears or ocular lubricants, and solutions for disinfecting contact lenses.

The use of amidoamines to treat or prevent infections attributable toand fungi is described. The amidoamines are highly effective against bothand fungi, and are less toxic to delicate tissues that may become infected with these types of microorganisms (e.g., the cornea).

Alkylpolypropyleneoxide amidotriamines having antimicrobial activity are described. The compounds are useful as antimicrobial preservatives in various types of pharmaceutical compositions. Ophthalmic compositions containing these compounds as disinfecting agents or preservatives are also described.

Aminobiguanides and the use of same as antimicrobial agents in pharmaceutical compositions are disclosed. The aminobiguanides are useful in the preservation of pharmaceutical compositions, particularly ophthalmic pharmaceutical compositions and compositions for treating contact lenses. The compounds are especially useful for disinfecting contact lenses.

An improved method for rapid disinfection of contact lenses in a convenient and reliable manner is disclosed in which a series of oxidation-reduction reactions are employed. Specifically, dichloroisocyanurate and potassium iodide react to form iodine species for disinfecting the contact lens. An amount of ascorbate is then added to neutralize the iodine species.

The use of certain amidoamines to disinfect contact lenses and preserve ophthalmic compositions is described, Ophthalmic compositions containing these compounds as disinfecting agents or preservatives are also described, The amidoamines utilized in the present invention have potent antibacterial and antifungal activity, and are chemically compatible with inorganic ions and other materials utilized in ophthalmic compositions.
