A catalyst for polymerizing olefins is the reaction product of (A) the reaction product of (1) the reaction product of (a) an alkyl magnesium compound such as dibutylmagnesium, with (b) an oxygen-containing and/or nitrogen-containing compound such as n-propyl alcohol, or isopropylamine, with (2) a halide source such as titanium tetrachloride or silicon tetrachloride; and (B) a transition metal compound such as titanium tetrachloride and (C) a reducing agent such as triisobutylaluminum. Also disclosed is a non-transition metal containing catalyst support for use in preparing olefin polymerization catalysts. The polymers which are produced in the presence of this catalyst and a cocatalyst such as triethylaluminum have a low catalyst support to transition metal ratio and therefore, the catalyst efficiency based on quantity of polymer per quantity of total catalyst is very high resulting in a polymer having good color and very little, if any, corrosion.

Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst prepared by reacting a mixture of a tetrahydrocarbyloxy titanium compound such as tetraisopropyl titanate and a hydrocarbyloxy titanium oxide such as di(isopropoxy) titanium oxide, an organomagnesium component such as a hydrocarbon soluble complex of dialkyl magnesium and an organoaluminum compound such as triethyl aluminum and a halide source such as ethyl aluminum dichloride. The catalysts employed in this process provide higher efficiencies than these catalysts employing either of the titanium compounds alone.

Process for polymerizing olefins

A process for polymerizing olefins employing as a catalyst therefor, the reaction product of (A) the reaction product of (1) the reaction product of (a) an alkyl magnesium compound such as dibutylmagnesium, with (b) an oxygen-containing and/or nitrogen-containing compound such as n-propyl alcohol, or isopropylamine, with (2) a halide source such as titanium tetrachloride or silicon tetrachloride; and (B) a transition metal compound such as titanium tetrachloride and (C) a reducing agent such as triisobutylaluminum. Compositions exhibiting high catalytic activity in the polymerization of .alpha.-olefins are prepared by reacting a mixture of a tetrahydrocarbyloxy titanium compound such as tetraisopropyl titanate and a hydrocarbyloxy titanium oxide such as di(isopropoxy) titanium oxide, an organomagnesium component such as a hydrocarbon soluble complex of dialkyl magnesium and an organoaluminum compound such as triethyl aluminum and a halide source such as ethyl aluminum dichloride. Polymerization processes employing this catalyst composition do not require conventional catalyst removal steps in order to provide polymers having suitable color and other physical characteristics and these catalysts provide higher efficiencies than those catalysts employing either of the titanium compounds alone.

High efficiency catalyst for polymerizing olefins

A catalyst for the polymerization of olefins is prepared by the reaction of an aliphatic alcohol such as n-propyl alcohol with a mixture of an alkyl magnesium compound such as n-butyl, sec-butyl magnesium and a silicon tetrahalide such as SiCl.sub.4. After washing the precipitate several times with a hydrocarbon such as hexane, it is suspended in a hydrocarbon such as hexane and an organic titanium compound such as TiCl.sub.4 is added after which a suitable reducing agent such as diethyl aluminum chloride is added. The thus formed solid catalyst is washed several times with a hydrocarbon solvent such as hexane.

Olefins are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst which is prepared by the controlled reaction of an aliphatic alcohol such as n-propyl alcohol and a mixture of an alkyl magnesium compound such as n-butyl, sec-butyl magnesium and a silicon tetrahalide such as SiCl.sub.4. After washing the precipitate several times with a hydrocarbon such as hexane, it is suspended in a hydrocarbon such as hexane and a titanium compound such as TiCl.sub.4 is added after which a suitable reducing agent such as diethyl aluminum chloride is added. The thus formed solid catalyst is washed several times with a hydrocarbon solvent such as hexane.
