The specification discloses an electronic dynamic balance leak testing system utilizing a 'live zero', wherein a source of test medium at a predetermined desired pressure or vacuum is connected to a part to be tested, and after the part is filled with the test medium, and an interval is provided for the system to stabilize the affects due to wave front oscillations, the test part is momentarily isolated from said test media and a microcomputer system is utilized, both to cause said isolation, and to measure the differential pressure existing at two points during the test. In a modification of our system which can dynamically project leak and accept or reject parts much sooner because of this projection feature, the rate of change of the differential pressure transducer is examined and is compared to a curve which is characteristic of the rate of change of a volume which is experiencing a predominately leak based change of pressure. When the rate of change is determined to be predominately a leak based change, the rate of change is determined to be a 'Qualified Leak' or a qualified curve. In this case, after a predetermined sample time elapses from the point at which the curve was qualified, a reading of leakage is taken, such reading is then extrapolated to a full test time reading and compared to limits to see if a part is to be accepted or rejected.

Method and apparatus for electronic leak testing

The specification discloses a method and apparatus for calibrating liquid flow meters of all types. The system includes a scale for dynamically determining the weight of a liquid flowing through a flow meter, together with means for measuring the flow through the flow meter being tested. In the case of a glass tube flow meter, a float detection system is used, whereby the operator will set the flow through the flow meter to a desired point, use the float detection system to make certain the float stays in a fixed position during the test, as well as to locate the float from a reference point, and use the system to measure the flow through the flow meter during a fixed period of time, thereby obtaining a reading, in engineering units, for each predetermined position of the float.

Method and apparatus for calibrating flow meters

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for cold testing of typical piston engines to determine their internal integrity and tolerance prior to further testing or use which could be destructive if a defect exists. A source of pressure oil is fed to the normal engine oil pressure system while the engine is slowly rotated. The amount of oil flow is measured and recorded by a unique orifice flow device which yields a differential pressure signal in proportion to the oil flow as the engine is rotated. The variation in oil flow in selected segments of rotation is analyzed to determine the engine condition. Such common assembly faults as missing rod or main bearings, loose bearing caps, or excessive bearing clearance may be detected and isolated for repair.

Engine cold testing

A tool and method for automatically adjusting internal combustion engine valve lash is disclosed. The engine is first rotated to correctly position the valve lifter cam for the individual valve which is to be adjusted. The novel tool of this invention is then positioned and sequenced through a series of operations which properly set the valve lash or preload, whichever is required. The system uses a linear variable differential transformer probe in the preferred embodiment to establish when the valve is seated. The valve lash adjusting means is advanced until the rocker arm engages the valve stem. The initial movement of the valve stem is sensed by a linear variable differential transformer and a zero reference is established at the point where the valve just begins to move. The valve lash adjusting means is then rotated out until the valve stem returns to the established zero position at which point the valve lash adjusting means is further rotated out a specified number of degrees which, utilizing the adjusting means as a micrometer, accurately sets the required valve lash.
