An iron-based soft magnetic alloy greater than 63.5 mm in width, a thickness between 13 and 20 microns and having a composition represented by the following formula:(FeM)CuSiBM'M&#x2033;Xwherein M is Co and/or Ni, M&#x2032; is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Nb, W, Ta, Zr, Hf, Ti and Mo, M&#x2033; is at least one element selected from the group consisting of V, Cr, Mn, Al, elements in the platinum group, Sc, Y, rare earth elements, Au, Zn, Sn and Re, X is at least one element selected from the group consisting of C, Ge, P, Ga, Sb, In, Be and As, and a, x, y, z, p, q and r respectively satisfy 0&#x2264;a&#x2264;0.5, 0.1&#x2264;x&#x2264;3, 0&#x2264;y&#x2264;30, 1&#x2264;z&#x2264;25, 5&#x2264;y+z&#x2264;30, 0.1&#x2264;p&#x2264;30, q&#x2264;10 and r&#x2264;10, the alloy being at least 50% crystalline with an average particle size of 100 nm or less. This alloy has low core loss, high permeability and low magnetostriction.

Wide iron-based amorphous alloy, precursor to nanocrystalline alloy

A magnetomechanical resonance element or marker strip with facilitated performance based on an amorphous magnetostrictive alloy ribbon having a line-like surface pattern is utilized in an electronic article surveillance marker or sensor element. A direction of magnetic anisotropy at angle between 80 and 90 degree away from ribbon's length direction and in ribbon's plane is introduced during ribbon fabrication, which increases the resonance performance with minimal loss in the magneto-mechanical circuit, and more particularly, in a marker or sensor element utilizing a plurality of resonating elements or marker strips. A marker or sensor element is fabricated utilizing the resonance element or elements and is utilized in an electronic article surveillance and identification systems.

Magnetomechanical sensor element and application thereof in electronic article surveillance and detection system

A magnetomechanical resonance element or marker strip with facilitated performance based on an amorphous magnetostrictive alloy ribbon is utilized in an electronic article surveillance marker. A curvature along the element's length direction is introduced during ribbon fabrication with a different radius of curvature, which increases the resonance performance with minimal loss in the magneto-mechanical circuit, and more particularly, in a marker utilizing a plurality of resonating elements or marker strips. A marker is fabricated utilizing the resonance element or elements and is utilized in an electronic article surveillance system.

Marker for mechanically resonant article surveillance system

A filter circuit is used to select frequency bands of digital and analog signals over communications channels in a DSL communications system. The filter circuit includes an inductor having a core that consists essentially of an Fe-base amorphous metal alloy. Advantageously, the filter circuit provides as good or better performance than a filter circuit using a Co-base core; but is much less expensive. As such, it provides a low cost, high efficiency solution to communications applications, such as DSL communications systems, and the like.

A magnetic implement has a gap size ranging from about 1 to about 20 mm. The implement comprises a magnetic core composed of an amorphous Fe-based alloy. A physical gap is disposed in the core's magnetic path. The alloy has an amorphous structure; is based on the components: (Fe&#x2014;Ni&#x2014;Co)&#x2014;(B&#x2014;Si&#x2014;C). The sum of its Fe+Ni+Co content is in the range of 65&#x2013;85 atom percent. Advantageously, the core exhibits an overall magnetic permeability ranging from about 40 to about 200 and enhanced magnetic performance.

Gapped amorphous metal-based magnetic core

A magnetic core has a toroidal configuration, formed by winding an iron-based amorphous metal ribbon. Thereafter the core is heat-treated to achieve a linear B-H characteristic. Advantageously, the linear B-H characteristic does not change with the level of magnetic fields applied and the frequency utilized. With such properties, the core is especially suited for use in a current transformer.

A metallic glass alloy ribbon consists essentially of about 70 to 87 atom percent iron. Up to about 20 atom percent of the iron is replaced by cobalt and up to about 3 atom percent of the iron is replaced by nickel, manganese, vanadium, titanium or molybdenum. About 13-30 atom percent of the element balance comprises a member selected from the group consisting of boron, silicon and carbon. The alloy is heat-treated at a sufficient temperature to achieve stress relief. A magnetic field applied during the heat-treatment causes the magnetization to point away from the ribbon's predetermined easy magnetization direction. The metallic glass exhibits linear DC BH loops with low ac losses. As such they are especially well suited for use in current/voltage transformers.

A glassy metal alloy consists essentially of the formula Co Ni Fe M B Si C , where M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Cr, Mo, Mn and Nb, &ldquo;a-g&rdquo; are in atom percent and the sum of &ldquo;a-g&rdquo; equals 100, &ldquo;a&rdquo; ranges from about 25 to about 60, &ldquo;b&rdquo; ranges from about 5 to about 45, &ldquo;c&rdquo; ranges from about 6 to about 12, &ldquo;d&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to about 3, &ldquo;e&rdquo; ranges from about 5 to 25, &ldquo;f&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to about 15 and &ldquo;g&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to 6, said alloy having a value of the saturation magnetostriction between &minus;3 ppm and &plus;3 ppm. The alloy can be cast by rapid solidification from the melt into ribbon, sheet or wire form. The alloy exhibits non-linear B&mdash;H hysteresis behavior in its as-cast condition. The alloy is further annealed with or without magnetic field at temperatures below said alloy's first crystallization temperature, having non-linear B&mdash;H hysteresis loops. The alloy is suited for use as a magnetic marker in electronic article surveillance systems utilizing magnetic harmonics.

A glassy metal alloy consists essentially of the formula Co Ni Fe M B Si C where M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Cr, Mo, Mn and Nb, &ldquo;a-g&rdquo; are in atom percent and the sum of &ldquo;a-g&rdquo; equals 100, &ldquo;a&rdquo; ranges from about 25 to about 60, &ldquo;b&rdquo; ranges from about 5 to about 45, &ldquo;c&rdquo; ranges from about 6 to about 12, &ldquo;d&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to about 3, &ldquo;e&rdquo; ranges from about 5 to 25, &ldquo;f&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to about 15 and &ldquo;g&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to 6, said alloy having a value of the saturation magnetostriction between &minus;3 ppm and &plus;3 ppm. The alloy can be cast by rapid solidification from the melt into ribbon, sheet or wire form. The alloy exhibits rounded or rectangular or sheared B-H hysteresis behaviors in its as-cast condition. The alloy is further annealed with or without magnetic field at temperatures below said alloy's first crystallization temperature, having rounded or rectangular or sheared or linear B-H hysteresis loops. The alloy is suited for magnetic applications especially at high frequencies.

A glassy metal alloy consists essentially of the formula Fe,Co,Ni,M,B,Si,C,, where &ldquo;M&rdquo; is at least one member selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, chromium and manganese, &ldquo;a-g&rdquo; are in atom percent, &ldquo;a&rdquo; ranges from about 19 to about 29, &ldquo;b&rdquo; ranges from about 16 to about 42, &ldquo;c&rdquo; ranges from about 20 to about 40, &ldquo;d&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to about 3, &ldquo;e&rdquo; ranges from about 10 to about 20, &ldquo;f&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to about 9 and &ldquo;g&rdquo; ranges from about 0 to about 3. The alloy can be cast by rapid solidification into ribbon, annealed to enhance magnetic properties, and formed into a marker that is especially suited for use in magneto-mechanically actuated article surveillance systems. Advantageously, the marker is characterized by substantially linear magnetization response to an applied magnetic field in the frequency regime wherein harmonic marker systems operate magnetically. Voltage amplitudes detected for the marker are high, and interference between surveillance systems based on mechanical resonance and harmonic re-radiance is virtually eliminated.

A glassy metal alloy consists essentially of the formula Fe.sub.a Co.sub.b Ni.sub.c M.sub.d B.sub.e Si.sub.f C.sub.g, where 'M' is at least one member selected from the group consisting of molybdenum, chromium and manganese, 'a-g' are in atom percent, 'a' ranges from about 30 to about 45, 'b' ranges from about 8 to about 18, 'c' ranges from about 20 to about 45, 'd' ranges from about 0 to about 3, 'e' ranges from about 12 to about 20, 'f' ranges from about 0 to about 5 and 'g' ranges from about 0 to about 2. The alloy can be cast by rapid solidification into ribbon, cross-field annealed to enhance magnetic properties, and formed into a marker that is especially suited for use in magneto-mechanically actuated article surveillance systems. Advantageously, the marker is characterized by substantially linear magnetization response in the frequency regime wherein harmonic marker systems operate magnetically. Voltage amplitudes detected for the marker are high, and interference between surveillance systems based on mechanical resonance and harmonic re-radiance is virtually eliminated.

A magnetic theft detection system includes a glassy metal alloy strip having a value of magnetostriction near zero. The strip has been annealed to produce a step change in the magnetization versus applied field behavior (B-H loop) thereof, and has a composition consisting essentially of the formula.

The alloy can be cast by rapid solidification into ribbon, annealed to enhance magnetic properties thereof, and formed into a marker that is especially suited for use in magneto-mechanically actuated article surveillance systems. Advantageously, the marker is characterized by relatively linear magnetization response in the frequency regime wherein harmonic marker systems operate magnetically.
