A pump-less breath analysis device regulates the flow of breath past a nanoparticle sensor (or other semiconductor sensor) by dynamically adjusting the state or position of a valve as the user exhales into the device. The valve controls the flow of incoming breath between two flow paths: a venting path through which breath exits the device without passing by the nanoparticle sensor, and a sensing path that includes the nanoparticle sensor. In some embodiments, the valve is controlled by a processor that monitors pressure produced by the user's exhalation force. Based on these real-time pressure measurements, the processor adjusts the valve to maintain the pressure, and thus the flow rate, in the sensing path within a desired range. The processor may also use the pressure measurements to determine whether the characteristics of the user's exhalation are sufficient to generate a valid measurement.

Computer-automated processes are disclosed for establishing verified communications channels with authors and other creators of works via communications with a trusted verifier entity. The verified communications channels may be used for various purposes, such as to seek authorization to make a book or other printed publication searchable on a public network.

An electronic catalog system provides an interface for users to author and post content for viewing by other users. Users who are verified as creators of works represented in the electronic catalog (e.g., authors of books) are additionally given the option to post content that is displayed on the catalog pages of such works with attribution to the works' creators. In one embodiment, the system is capable of verifying a user's claim to be a creator of a particular work through automated communications with a third party verifier designated by the user. The third party verifier may, for example, be a publisher (in the case of books), a recording company (in the case of musical works), or a motion picture studio (in the case of movies).

Various processes are disclosed for conducting database searches by voice. One such process enables a user to efficiently submit a search query by partially spelling the search query (either on a telephone keypad or via voice utterances) and uttering the full search query. Also disclosed are various processes for generating speech recognition grammars for interpreting utterances of search queries. In one such process, search queries are selected from a search query log for incorporation into a speech recognition grammar. The search query log may include or consist of search queries specified by users without the use of voice.

Various processes are disclosed for conducting database searches by telephone. A user is initially prompted to utter N characters of a search query, and/or to enter these characters on a telephone keypad. Based on the user's entry, a speech recognition grammar is either selected or is generated dynamically for processing the user's utterance of the complete search query. In one embodiment, the speech recognition grammar is selected based on a sequence of N telephone keys selected by the user, without requiring the user to uniquely specify the N characters to which these keys correspond. In another embodiment, the speech recognition grammar is selected based solely on utterances of the N characters by the user such that the correct grammar is selected even if an utterance of one character is misidentified as an utterance of a similar sounding character. Also disclosed are methods for generating speech recognition grammars from query logs.

A disk array controller detects whether each drive it is connected to is an ATA drive or a SCSI drive, and communicates with that disk drive using the corresponding protocol. Preferably, the disk array controller supports both the Serial ATA interface specification and the Serial Attached SCSI interface specification, allowing either or both types of disk drives to be included within a RAID or other disk array configuration.
