Photographic glass plates can be prepared by directly coating the appropriate layer formations onto a glass support. One element comprises a thin subbing layer (less than 2 .mu.m), an antihalation layer, a silver halide emulsion layer, and a protective overcoat layer that can also include a matting agent or lubricant. Another embodiment has the antihalation layer coated directly onto the support.

High-contrast room-light-handleable contact-exposed ultraviolet-sensitive black-and-white silver halide photographic elements useful in the field of graphic arts are provided with an electrically-conductive layer which serves to provide antistatic protection. The electrically-conductive layer is comprised of electrically-conductive metal-containing particles, such as particles of antimony-doped tin oxide, a film-forming polymer, such as gelatin, and an ultraviolet-absorber, such as a solid particle filter dye, in an amount sufficient to provide halation protection.

High-contrast photographic elements protected against halation

A high-contrast room-light-handleable black-and-white silver halide photographic element that is especially useful in the field of graphic arts is comprised of a support, an imaging layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size of less than 0.12 micrometers, a print-out layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size in the range of from 0.14 to 0.4 micrometers, and a third set of doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size of less than 0.12 micrometers distributed within the print-out layer or within a separate safelight protection layer. Dopant levels are controlled so that the photographic speed of the imaging layer is higher than the photographic speed of the print-out layer and so that the photographic speed of the third set of silver halide grains is less than that of the imaging layer. The element utilizes very slow speed emulsions which render it capable of being handled in room light and is able to print-out a visible image on normal exposure and develop to full density upon being processed in conventional developing solutions.

High-contrast photographic elements with enhanced safelight performance

A high-contrast room-light-handleable black-and-white silver halide photographic element that is especially useful in the field of graphic arts is comprised of a support, an imaging layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size of less than 0.12 micrometers, and a print-out layer containing doped silver halide grains with a mean grain size in the range of from 0.14 to 0.4 micrometers. High-contrast photographic elements with improved print-out capability

A high-contrast room-light-handleable black-and-white photographic element is comprised of a support having on one side thereof a silver halide emulsion layer and having, on the same side of the support as the silver halide emulsion layer, both a filter dye layer in which the dye is immobile and a matte layer comprised of a matting agent dispersed in a hydrophilic colloid that serves as a binder. In this element, the filter dye layer serves to provide uniform filtering of incident light, while the matte layer provides a rough surface which facilitates rapid vacuum draw-down during contact exposure.

A process of contacting two photographic elements by juxtaposing the elements and drawing a vacuum between them is described wherein at least one of the elements has been exposed and processed and comprises a support having thereon, as the outermost layer facing the other element, a matte layer comprising matte particles and a polymeric binder. This process is improved by utilizing as the matte layer a layer comprising less than about 1.08 g/m.sup.2 of binder and having matte particles that are present in an amount sufficient and have a mean diameter great enough so that the outermost layer has a roughness measurement, R.sub.a as defined by ANSI Standard B46.1 1985, of greater than about 1.00 microinches.

A high-contrast photographic element is disclosed comprising a support having thereon in order, a layer comprising a filter dye (A), at least one silver halide emulsion layer having a gamma of at least 10, and a layer comprising a filter dye (B), which is the same as or different from dye (A), wherein filter dyes (A) and (B) absorb light in the region of the spectrum to which the silver halide emulsion layer is sensitive.
