Dentifrice compositions are provided having an effervescent and cleansing action. The dentifrice compositions are formed from an essentially anhydrous dentifrice base medium and an inorganic oxide material containing an adsorbed gas. Upon contact of the dentifrice composition with water, an effervescent action occurs as the gas is desorbed from the inorganic oxide material.

A process is provided for achieving a high degree of exchange for zeolites, e.g., Zeolites F and W. After preparation of the ammonium form, the zeolite is contacted with a solution containing the desired metal cation while simultaneously maintaining the pH at between about 9.0 and 12.0 to provide a final product zeolite wherein the desired metal cation will correspond to at least about 0.5 of the total zeolitic cations.

A process for the removal of water and other polar compounds from an acidic stream containing water and at least one acid compound comprising contacting the acidic stream with an adsorbent comprising a chabazite-type zeolite wherein said adsorbent has a M.sub.2 O/Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 mole oxide ratio of at least 0.5 where 'M' is at least one cation selected from the group consisting of potassium, rubidium and cesium.

Ammonium ions are selectively removed from aqueous solutions containing calcium cations by cation exchange with natural or synthetic zeolites of the phillipsitegismondite type, which possess unusual capacity and selectivity for the ammonium ion.

Zeolite agglomerates in which the distribution of capillary pores is modified to enhance the number of pores in the diameter range of from 2 to 100 microns are found to have a greatly improved ability to release adsorbed CO.sub.2 into liquid media in a manner which favors both a high rate of desorption and a high degree of solubility of the desorbate gases in the liquid media. The agglomerates are particularly useful for the carbonation of an aqueous medium.
