A selective call receiving device (14) and method distinguishes between received message words with no errors and received message words with correctable errors so as to display a corrected message word with a predetermined number of correctable errors to a user while advising the user that the corrected word may be false or in error.

System and method for indicating errored messages

A method and apparatus determine a response to a control value (316, 320) periodically transmitted by a communication system in at least one code word (306, 332) of a frame (302) of data of a communication protocol. The control value (316, 320) is for controlling a receive operation, such as the sleep interval for increasing battery life of a communication receiver (122) operating in the communication system. The receiver (122) accepts (404, 504) and stores (406, 506) earlier data from an earlier transmission of the frame (302) of data, and receives (408, 508) current data from a current transmission of the frame (302) of data. The receiver (122) thereafter makes a comparison (414, 512) of the earlier data and the current data, and selects from (a) performing (424, 520) the receive operation in accordance with a current control value received in the current data and (b) performing (418, 516, 528) the receive operation in accordance with an alternative (earlier or predetermined) control value, in respone to the comparison.

Communication receiver for controlling a receive operation in response

A method and apparatus (400) manages a current data symbol received by a receiver (122) in a frame of data of a time diversity communication system (102, 104). A symbol counter (402) counts a signal (404) from a symbol clock synchronized to the frame of data to provide a count of the current data symbol, and a bit line translator (416) maps a current address from the count. A conditional processor (434) derives a selected memory address from the current address. Then, based upon the current address, a comparator (424) makes a choice among (a) storing the current data symbol in a memory at the selected memory address, (b) merging the current data symbol with an earlier received data symbol stored at the selected memory address during an earlier frame of data, and (c) ignoring the current data symbol.

Method and apparatus for managing a data symbol received in a time

A time diversity communication system (150) comprises a messaging terminal (154), a queue (156) at the messaging terminal for queuing incoming messages, an encoder (158) for encoding a first fragment of a message and the remaining fragments of a message, a transmitter (160) for repeatedly transmitting the first fragment in a plurality of time slots to at least one selective call receiver (201) operating in a first mode, the number of time slots equaling a desired number of repeat transmissions and wherein the first fragment contains instructions for decoding the remaining fragments in a second mode by the selective call receiver, the transmitter (160) also repeatedly transmits the remaining portions of the message in subsequent time slots and at least one selective call receiver that decodes the first fragment and remaining fragments of the message in accordance with instructions in the decoded first fragment.
