A potted electrical circuit is enclosed within a housing and has a first and second fiberglass layer that is laid upon a top surface of the potted electrical circuit. A lid of the housing seals the electrical circuit there within and an opening formed in a side wall allows circuitry wiring to extend there from out. The first fiberglass layer is a woven layer while the second fiberglass layer is a padding-like layer. Circuitry wiring pushes through the woven first fiberglass layer before extending out through the opening in the housing. The first fiberglass layer is tucked in and around the electrical circuit and adheres to the inside of the housing by attaching to the potting material while it hardens. In a preferred embodiment, the electrical circuit in combination with the insulation material is used within a transient voltage surge suppression device.

A circuit board is enclosed in a housing containing rows of metal oxide varistors. Multiple surge ferrule type fuses are soldered directly to circuit board holes between the rows of metal oxide varistors. A ring connector electrically connects pairs of fuses and an electrical conductor connects the ring connector to an electrical circuit to be protected.

Apparatus and method for fusing voltage surge and transient anomalies in a surge suppression device

The disclosure describes a surge protection device that makes use of metal oxide varistors (MOVs) to limit the magnitude of electrical surges in single phase or multi-phase power distribution networks. Since MOVs generally fail in a low impedance mode when the electrical ratings of the devices are exceeded, current limiting and thermal limiting devices are connected in series with the MOVs to limit the effect of these failures to the surge protection devices. The physical configuration of the surge protection device limits the effects of a current limiter being activated by providing a barrier between the current limiter and the associated MOV. Filler material is also used to limit the effects of debris or plasma gas from an activated current limiter. Multiple surge protection devices may be connected in parallel to provide increased current handling capability, and visual indication of a failed surge protection device may be provided.
