A device and method for identifying solid and liquid materials use near-infrared transmission spectroscopy combined with multivariate calibration methods for analysis of the spectral data. Near-infrared transmission spectroscopy is employed within either the 700-1100 nm or the 900-1700 nm wavelength range to identify solid or liquid materials and determine whether they match specific known materials. Uses include identifying solid (including powdered) and liquid materials with a fast measurement cycle time of about 2 to 15 seconds and with a method that requires no sample preparation, as well as quantitative analysis to determine the concentration of one or more chemical components in a solid or liquid sample that consists of a mixture of components. A primary application of such analysis includes detection of counterfeit drug tablets, capsules and liquid medications.

Optical analyzer for identification of materials using transmission spectroscopy

A light source for near-infrared transmission and reflection spectroscopy can be constructed from a combination of a high power blue or blue-green light emitting diode (LED) and a phosphor element based on an inorganic material. The phosphor element absorbs the LED light and, in response to the LED excitation, emits luminescence that continuously covers the 700-1050 nm range. One possible material that can be used for such a near-infrared emitting phosphor element is a single crystal rod of Ti+3 doped Sapphire. An alternative near-infrared emitting phosphor material is a disk or rectangular shaped composite of Tidoped Sapphire powder embedded in a clear optical epoxy or silicone encapsulant. Such a combination of a blue LED for excitation of a phosphor element that emits in a broad wavelength band has been widely used in white LEDs where the emission is in the 400-700 nm range.

Optical analyzer for identification of materials using reflectance spectroscopy

A system and method for non-invasively inspecting one or more vessels capable of transmitting IR light containing liquid is provided, which uses a near-infrared (NIR) imaging device in combination with one or two NIR light sources, a diffuser plate, and an optical wavelength selecting means is provided for selecting one or more wavelength bands. In addition, the system may further comprise a computer processing means, a computer database containing known absorbance values, and a computer application, such that the system may compare the collected spectroscopic data to known spectroscopic data, and identify the liquid contained within the inspected vessel. The inspection method of the present invention measures a transmission or reflection image of one or more vessels being inspected at one or more narrow wavelength intervals in the NIR spectral range that corresponds to a peak absorbance wavelength of water, organic liquids, and explosive compositions.

Optical system and method for inspection and characterization of liquids in vessels

A water trap system based on a thermoelectric cooling device is employed to remove a major fraction of the water from air samples, prior to analysis of these samples for chemical composition, by a variety of analytical techniques where water vapor interferes with the measurement process. These analytical techniques include infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ion mobility spectrometry and gas chromatography. The thermoelectric system for trapping water present in air samples can substantially improve detection sensitivity in these analytical techniques when it is necessary to measure trace analytes with concentrations in the ppm (parts per million) or ppb (parts per billion) partial pressure range. The thermoelectric trap design is compact and amenable to use in a portable gas monitoring instrumentation.

Method and system for measuring the relative concentrations of first and second isotopic forms of a chemical species within a sample. The present invention need not use a laser or high resolution spectrometer. The system typically includes a waveguide cell with good transmission of particular wavelengths of IR radiation, such as a hollow glass fiber waveguide cell. A source emits electromagnetic radiation, which is modulated at first and second wavelength bands that correspond to absorption bands of the first and second isotopic forms of the chemical species, respectively. In certain embodiments, the source is a filtered broad band source, such as a plurality of LEDs. In some embodiments, an FTIR spectrometer may serve as a filtered source and signal detector.

Systems and methods for monitoring relative concentrations of different

The invention provides an optical method and apparatus for determining the pH of a tissue. The method includes the step of first irradiating the tissue with optical radiation. The radiation may first pass through skin covering the tissue of interest, or may irradiate the tissue directly. Radiation reflected from the tissue is then collected to determine a reflection spectrum. pH is then determined by comparing this spectrum to a mathematical model relating optical properties to pH of the tissue.

A solar cell fabrication procedure is described in which an excimer laser is used to cut a trench in a flat solar cell substrate so as to electrically isolate front and back regions of the substrate. The trench is cut around the perimeter of the cell. The advantage of using an excimer laser is that it will ablate a trench without diffusing conductive material deeper into the cell.

A solar cell fabrication procedure is described in which a trench is cut in the substrate so as to electrically isolate front and back regions of a flat solar cell. The trench is preferably cut around the perimeter of the rear side of the cell. The trench is preferably formed by an excimer laser which may be used to ablate a trench without diffusing conductive material deeper into the cell.
