An image forming apparatus, which may be a printer, includes an image acquisition subsystem and a processing subsystem. The image acquisition subsystem includes an imager and a source. The imager is configured to scan an image while the image acquisition subsystem moves with respect to the image forming apparatus and configured to provide electrical signals including information related to the scanned image. The source is configured to emanate electromagnetic radiation based on the electrical signals. The processing subsystem includes a receiving component configured to receive the electromagnetic radiation emanated from the source of the image acquisition subsystem. The image forming apparatus also includes a structure supporting both the image acquisition subsystem and the processing subsystem.

Methods and systems for transferring information between a movable system and another system

A multi-function printer having a compact size and portable configuration while providing printing, scanning and copying functionalities is disclosed herein. The multi-function printer includes a printer assembly and a scanner assembly configured to cooperatively utilize the same pick and paper movement systems along a common feed or paper path to perform these printing, scanning and copying functions. Thus, the disclosed multi-function printer may require a less complex paper movement and control system which, in turn, reduces the printer's overall weight while increasing its flexibility and/or portability.

Embodiments of the present invention provide apparatuses and methods related to a manually operated image translation device. The device may include a carriage, which houses image translation components, that is manually manipulated along a transverse member. An advancement arrangement may advance a medium when the image translation components clear an image translation zone of an adjacent medium. Other embodiments may be described and claimed.

An inkjet nozzle array includes a plurality of nozzles. Each nozzle includes a chamber having an input aperture adapted to receive ink into the chamber and an output aperture through which ink is ejected from the chamber. Each chamber further includes a window adapted to receive electromagnetic radiation and operable to heat ink in the chamber responsive to the electromagnetic radiation and eject an ink droplet through the output aperture.

Inkjet printhead system and method using laser-based heating

A multifunction printer having a compact size and portable configuration while providing printing, scanning and copying functionalities is disclosed. The multi-function printer may include a paper handling assembly and a floating scanner assembly pivotably coupled to the paper handling assembly. The multi-function printer may further include a printer assembly coupled to the paper handling assembly. The floating scanner assembly is coupled to and aligned with a pick roller portion of the paper handling assembly and configured to scan and/or otherwise operate on a media supported within a document feeder. Thus, the multi-function printer may provide a wide variety of functionalities while maintaining a desirable compact configuration and portability.

Methods and systems for transferring information between a movable system and another system. The movable subsystem includes an electrical component providing electrical signal including information. Electromagnetic radiation is modulated according to the information. The other subsystem includes a receiving component that receives the modulated electromagnetic radiation and converts the received electromagnetic radiation into other electrical signals.

The velocity of a printhead scanning across a sheet of paper or other print medium is varied on the basis of whether masking patterns for selectively activating nozzle of the printhead include activations in consecutive pixel locations of the masking pattern. The pixel locations are 'firing opportunities' as defined by the maximum firing frequency assigned to the nozzles when the printhead is scanned at a particular velocity. The printhead is moved at that velocity when a masking pattern includes activation in consecutive pixel locations. On the other hand, a higher scanning velocity is available when a constraint is enforced to prevent occasions of firings in consecutive pixel locations. In one embodiment, the constraint is not enforced, but masking patterns are analyzed on a pattern-by-pattern basis to detect those patterns which satisfy the constraint, so that the scanning velocity can be increased during the suitable masking patterns.

Enabling increased print speed by eliminating nozzle firing sequencing

A different adaptive control method is used to control a motor during each of two or more phases of motor operation. Thus, in a first phase of motor operation the motor is controlled using a first adaptive control method, in a second phase of motor operation the motor is controlled using a second adaptive control method, and so forth. The motor can be controlled in this manner in any number of phases, in which the motor is used for any of a number of corresponding purposes. The method used in each phase can be optimized to suit that type of operation without compromising operation during other phases.

Method and apparatus for adaptive motor speed control

An inkjet printing system and method that enables printing to continue after an ink supply has been depleted without damaging the printhead associated with the depleted ink supply. The method detects whether less than a predetermined reserve amount of ink remains in a depleted ink supply and, if so, then ink drops will be ejected from that depleted ink supply only during servicing operations. Since ink drops from non-depleted ink supplies will still be ejected during both printing operations and servicing operations, printing can continue, though possibly with reduced image quality. This is particularly advantageous in printing systems that include fax capability, since fax messages that cannot be printed may be lost.
