Heat curable coating compositions particularly suitable as coatings for metal can ends are made from aqueous dispersions of epoxy resins, acrylic resins which are copolymers of polymerizable acids and other monomers, and alkylated phenol novolac resins.

A stable aqueous epoxy resin dispersion, useful as a coating composition when cured, is made by dispersing in water the reaction product of a diglycidyl ether of a dihydric phenol, a dihydric phenol, a diglycidyl ether of a polyoxyalkylene glycol and an alkyl phenol-formaldehyde novolac resin.

Desensitization of carbonless copy systems is provided by contacting an electron-accepting, color-reactant material capable of reacting with a substantially colorless chromogenic compound to form a visible image with a desensitizing agent comprising, in combination, a non-volatile, polyoxygenated compound and a strong chelating agent. In this manner, acid-reactive clay coatings typically used in carbonless copy paper systems are effectively desensitized and prevented from reacting with conventional chromogens, such as crystal violet lactone and benzoyl leuco methylene blue.

Opacifying agents of improved structural integrity and light scattering ability are disclosed. These agents are composed of hollow, substantially spherical agglomerates having discontinuous walls composed of solid, spherical microparticles. The microparticles are produced by admixing an aqueous, partially condensed aldehyde condensation product with an oily non-solvent material and an emulsifying agent to produce a water-in-oil emulsion. Polymerization acid catalyst is then admixed with the emulsion to produce the discrete, substantially spherical and opaque, solid microparticles. After inverting the emulsion to oil-in-water form and adding oil-soluble resin adhesive, elevated temperature is used to cure the adhesive while evaporatively removing residual oily non-solvent. This yields improved agglomerate opacifying agents of high physical stability.

Opacifying agents and process for production

These compositions comprise sand, a novolac binder resin and a hot distortion additive comprising a modified novolac resin which is prepared by co-reacting an alkylphenol with phenol and formaldehyde or by post-alkylating the novolac resin by means of alkylating compounds selected from alkenes, vinyl benzenes and unsaturated alicyclic compounds.

Microspheric opacifying agents are provided by admixing an aqueous, partially condensed, aldehyde condensation product with an oily material containing an emulsifying agent thereby forming a water-in-oil emulsion, admixing an amphiphilic acid catalyst with the emulsion and polymerizing the condensation product to form discrete, substantially spherical, opaque, solid particles. Additionally, the solid particles may be separated from the oily continuous phase and admixed with water for the further removal of oily material, and thereby causing the formation of spherical agglomerates or 'super particles' having a substantially greater opacity than the aforesaid discrete particles. The super particles are hollow, substantially spherical particles having substantially spherical, discontinuous walls composed of agglomerated substantially spherical particles.

Microscopic opacifying particles formed of a formaldehyde condensation product are chemically modified to impart anionic-, cationic- or hydroxy-functional groups thereto in order to provide improved dye receptivity, dispersibility and compatibility properties.

Hidden entries are provided on a receptor sheet by applying the desired intelligence to the sheet with a chemical densensitizing agent capable of preventing the formation of a visible image on the receptor sheet when the sheet is contacted with a mark-producing agent. The resulting visible image is provided in the form of a negative wherein the background of the visible image is provided by the mark-forming agent, while the foreground of the visible image is the densensitized portion of the sheet. The mark-forming system comprises a chromogenic composition which is applied to the surface of the receptor sheet adjacent the desensitized portion thereof. The coreactant for the chromogen may either be present on the receptor sheet prior to providing the hidden image thereon by means of a chemical desensitizer, or may be admixed with the chromogen prior to application thereof to the surface of the sheet.

Capsules containing water-dispersible material are disclosed. They are formed from an admixture of low HLB emulsifier, oily water-immiscible solvent for the emulsifier urea-formaldehyde prepolymer water-dispersible material, and water. This admixture is agitated to form a water-in-oil emulsion to which amphiphatic acidic catalyst is added to cure the prepolymer. After curing to solid form, the capsules are separated from the remaining liquid of the admixture.

Process for production of encapsulated water-dispersible materials

A transfer sheet is provided having a substrate coated with pressure-rupturable microcapsules containing an oil and an oil-soluble dye intermediate and a particulate oil-absorptive material which is non-reactive with the dye intermediate and is situated with respect to said microcapsules such that oil released by the microcapsules is absorbed thereby. The concentration of oil absorptive material is sufficient to permit writing on the coated substrate without interference from oil released by ruptured microcapsules but less than that which materially reduces the transfer of oily solution from ruptured microcapsules to an underlying copy sheet.

Microcapsules having an average diameter below 5 microns and containing a flame retardant material are incorporated into polymeric materials, such as polyurethane foams without affecting the structural integrity of the cell walls of the foam. The capsules are chemically bonded to the foam, as well as physically incorporated therein by employing polyhydroxy polymer-containing capsule wall materials which react with the isocyanate used in the polyurethane.

Encapsulated flame retardant system

A process for preparing color-developer coatings in which an oily solution of an acidic, organic material is emulsified in water and an insoluble, particulate, oil-adsorbent material is dispersed in the emulsion. The resulting emulsion-dispersion may be coated onto a receptor such as a paper substrate or other receiving surface and dried. The product resulting from the process is an enhanced color-developer coating for use in pressure-sensitive copy systems.

Opacifying super-particles

Opacifying agents, which may be coated onto or incorporated into paper sheets, consisting essentially of spherical aldehyde condensation polymeric super-particles, each having a spherical, discontinuous shell surrounding a spherical hollow core, said shell composed of agglomerated, discrete spherical aldehyde condensation polymeric secondary particles which are solid throughout. The opacifying agents are incorporated into paper sheets by admixing cellulosic fibers with the super-particles.
