A light source is combined with an optic and a reflector. Light incident onto to the reflector is reflected with a single reflection. The reflector occupies a portion of a solid angle around the light source to the exclusion of the optic at least with respect to any optical function. The reflector directly receives a second portion of light. The optic occupies substantially all of the remaining portion of the predetermined solid angle to directly receive a first portion of light from the light source. A reflected beam from the reflector is reflected into a predetermined reflection pattern. The inner and/or outer surface of the optic is shaped to refract or direct light which is directly transmitted into the optic from the light source from a first portion of light and/or reflected into the optic from the reflector from the reflected beam into a predetermined beam.

LED devices for offset wide beam generation

A lighting component may include a light emitting diode (LED) positioned on a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), and a reflector positioned on the PCBA over the LED. The LED may be configured to emit an effective span of light which may pass through the reflector from a rearward opening to a forward opening of the reflector. The reflector may include a first region with one or more surfaces configured to subtend a first portion of the effective span of light. The reflector may include a second region with one or more first surfaces configured to subtend a second portion of the effective span and one or more second surfaces configured to subtend exterior light entering the forward opening back through the forward opening. The reflector may include a third region with one or more surfaces configured to subtend exterior light entering the forward opening back through the forward opening.

An apparatus and method is characterized by providing an optical transfer function between a predetermined illuminated surface pattern, such as a street light pattern, and a predetermined energy distribution pattern of a light source, such as that from an LED. A lens is formed having a shape defined by the optical transfer function. The optical transfer function is derived by generating an energy distribution pattern using the predetermined energy distribution pattern of the light source. Then the projection of the energy distribution pattern onto the illuminated surface is generated. The projection is then compared to the predetermined illuminated surface pattern to determine if it acceptably matches. The process continues reiteratively until an acceptable match is achieved. Alternatively, the lens shape is numerically or analytically determined by a functional relationship between the shape and the predetermined illuminated surface pattern and predetermined energy distribution pattern of a light source as inputs.

LED device for wide beam generation

A method and apparatus for collecting and projecting light into a specified target illuminance. A lens may be mounted or otherwise paired to a carrier to form a lens/carrier combination, which may then be mounted to a printed circuit board containing a light emitting diode (LED). The lens/carrier combination may establish an optimum optical relationship between the LED and the lens, such that a predetermined photometric distribution of the LED is collected by the lens, while the remaining photometric distribution of the LED is rejected by the carrier. The photometric distribution of neighboring LEDs, if any, may also be rejected by the carrier so that interference light may not be allowed into any lens. A diffuser may then spread the specified target illuminance into a beam pattern that may be compliant with specific standards (e.g., Department of Transportation or Economic Commission for Europe standards).

A predetermined illuminated surface pattern is generated from a predetermined energy distribution pattern of an LED light source within an LED package having a light transmitting dome. An estimated optical transfer function of a lens shape of an optic is defined by the shape of an exterior and inner surface which envelopes at least in part the light transmitting dome of the LED package. An energy distribution pattern is obtained by combination of the estimated optical transfer function and the predetermined energy distribution pattern of the light source. A projection of the energy distribution pattern onto the illuminated surface is determined. The projection is compared to the predetermined illuminated surface pattern. The estimated optical transfer function is illuminated surface pattern.

LED device for wide beam generation and method of making the same

An apparatus is described that includes a light source, a first reflector, a lens and a second reflector. The first reflector is positioned to reflect a first portion of light from the light source, wherein the first portion of light is radiated from the light source in a central forward solid angle as defined by an outer edge of the first reflector. The lens is disposed azimuthally horizontal to the light source for accepting a second portion of light from the light source emitted in a peripheral forward solid angle. The second reflector reflects the first portion of light after reflectance from the first reflector and the second portion of light after passing through the lens in a composite beam, wherein the first reflector and the lens are configured such that the first and second portions of light behave as though they were emitted from a point source at the focus of the second reflector.

Device and apparatus for efficient collection and re-direction of emitted radiation

A method and system for providing an array of illumination modules is disclosed. A modular illumination system can comprise a one-dimensional array, a two-dimensional array, or other shapes and arrangements of the illumination modules. Adjacent illumination modules in the array can be attached to one another via a system of connectors. Each illumination module can comprise at least two connectors, one feeding electricity to a neighboring illumination module and one receiving electricity from a power source. The power source can comprise another neighboring illumination module or a power supply circuit that feeds the array of illumination modules or a subset of illumination modules in the array. Each illumination module can comprise a circuit board, at least one LED, and an optical system that manages light.

Method and system for providing an array of modular illumination sources

A lighting apparatus for retrofitting an existing luminaire includes a plurality of light emitting diodes (LED) of similar or differing wavelengths arranged and configured in at least one light bar array, a heat sink module thermally coupled to the at least one light bar array, an electronic power module electrically coupled to the at least one light bar array, and a plate coupled to the at least one light bar array, electronic power module and the heat sink module, the plate arranged and configured for coupling to the luminaire to provide quick and easy installation and replacement of the at least one light bar array, heat sink module and electronic power module into and from the luminaire.
