Disclosed herein are printed circuit boards with embedded solenoid filters through which signal traces pass to filter unwanted noise and electromagnetic interference. A printed circuit board comprises a least three layers, a solenoid embedded within the at least three layers, and at least one trace extending through the solenoid. The insertion loss characteristics of the solenoid filter can be tuned by modifying the number of turns in the solenoid(s) and the width of the solenoid(s). The solenoid filter may comprise multiple solenoids connected in series, with adjacent solenoids having opposite wind directions. Surface components may be included on the board to tune the insertion loss further.

The present invention may be regarded as a video recording system and method of enabling the recording of an external video data stream for a video program segment selected using an electronic program guide. The video recording system comprises a user interface that receives user input, a video input interface that receives the external video data stream for the selected video program segment, an isochronous interface connectable to an external rotating storage drive, and a video data management system. The video data management system uses the electronic program guide to select the video program segment in response to the user input. The video data management system recognizes connection of the external rotating storage drive to the video recording system and subsequently identifies the external rotating storage drive as available for video data storage. The video data management system uses the external video data stream for the video program segment to provide streaming video data, and routes at least a portion of the streaming video data to the external rotating storage drive via the isochronous interface in order to record the external video data stream for the video program segment.

A data stream control system and a method selectively store a series of selected data packets with interpacket time intervals from an incoming data transport stream. The data stream control system includes a programmable data packet filter that transmits the series of selected data packets in response to the packet filter parameter. A counter provides counter values for the selected data packets representing a time of reception for the respective selected data packet. The counter values are stored in association with the respective selected data packets to preserve information regarding the interpacket time intervals. The data stream control system can further include a timing restorer to transmit a stored series of selected data packets with interpacket time intervals which substantially match the corresponding interpacket time intervals of the series of selected data packets.

A disk drive connectable to a host system includes a disk, a buffer memory, and an audiovisual interface responsive to first data from the host system to provide audiovisual data. The disk drive further includes a host command interface adapted to receive host commands from the host system. The disk drive further includes a disk controller coupled to the audiovisual interface, the host command interface, the disk, and the buffer memory. The disk controller is responsive to the host commands to selectively allocate at least a portion of the buffer memory among the audiovisual data, and to selectively transfer the audiovisual data from the audiovisual interface to the buffer memory. The disk controller is further responsive to the host commands to selectively transfer the audiovisual data from the buffer memory to the disk to be stored.
