A sound muffler combines a resonator chamber with a dissipative layer surrounding a through pipe. The muffler provides sound attenuation over a wide range of sound frequencies while maintaining unimpeded flow of gases through the pipe. This attenuation is achieved by combining dissipation with a frusto-conical resonant chamber. The dissipation is achieved by encircling the through passage with a layer of low density material such as metallic or ceramic foam or loosely packed fibers of a heat resistant material. The low density material attenuates the high frequency waves while permitting the passage of low frequency sound waves into the frusto-conical resonant chamber.

Exhaust sound attenuation device and method of use

A muffler for reducing the sounds of combustion gases exhausted from an internal combustion engine including an elongated fluid passage extending between an inlet and an outlet such that the outlet is in fluid communication with the inlet. Further, the inlet being connectable with the gases exhausted from the engine and the outlet being connectable with the atmosphere. The muffler further including an outer tank surrounding the passage and a tubular connector having a first end in fluid connection with the passage and a second end in fluid connection with the tank such that the connector produces a fluid connection between the passage and the tank. The connectors having a perforated resistance plate to restrict the fluid flow between said passage and said sound chamber thereby reducing the severity of the sound or fluid pulses entering and exiting said sound chamber, perforations in said perforated plate forming an open portion of said plate and said open portion being less than 60 percent.

Exhaust muffler

A muffler for reducing the sounds of combustion gases exhausted from an internal combustion engine. The muffler including an elongated fluid passage extending between an inlet and an outlet such that the outlet is in fluid communication with the inlet. The inlet of the muffler being connectable with the gases exhausted from the engine and the outlet being connectable with the atmosphere. The passage having a first side region and a second side region circumferentially spaced from the first region with a fluid passage in at least one of the first and second side regions. The muffler further including a side attenuation sound chamber adjacent the at least one of the side regions wherein the chamber is circumferentially spaced from the other of the at least one side region.

Exhaust muffler having a horizontally extending sound attenuation chamber

A high performance muffler for an internal combustion engine of a passenger vehicle includes a straight through main pipe and a side branch open at one end to the main pipe and at the other end to the atmosphere. The side branch is tuned to attenuate a noise frequency that is loudest in the passenger compartment of the vehicle when the engine is operated without a muffler. Numerous embodiments of the invention are disclosed including arrangements in which the side branch pipe has acoustic path sections that are folded on one another to reduce the axial length of a main envelope of the side branch pipe.

Muffler

A compact muffler has a straight through inner cylindrical casing surrounded by an outer cylindrical casing defining a closed ended sound attenuating chamber therebetween. Within the outer chamber a plurality of axially extending, radially overlying, cylindrical intermediate casings form a plurality of annular sound attenuating passages. The sound passages are configured to have entrances in fluid communication either with an especially configured slot in the inner casing or between certain passages to define a plurality of discrete sound paths, with each sound path having a set length sufficient to generate a reflection wave for attenuating a sound wave having a frequency correlated to the distance of the sound path.
