The present invention relates to novel complexes of (transition) metals containing ligands having phosphinimine centers bonded to the (transition) metal.

Phosphinimine methanide transition metal catalysts

It is known to polymerize olefins using transition metal complexes and/or compounds. There is an ongoing search for catalysts for olefin polymerization which do not rely on transition metals as the active center. The present invention provides novel aluminum phosphinimine complexes, containing additional heteroatoms which are useful in the polymerization of olefins.

Aluminum complexes for olefin polymerization

It is known to polymerize olefins using transition metal complexes and/or compounds. An improved process is provided for the carbonylation of methanol to acetic acid and/or its derivatives, especially methyl acetate, under mild reaction conditions using a novel catalyst precursor. The carbonylation reaction can now typically be carried out at 80.degree. C. and CO pressure of 40 p.s.i.g.

A process is provided for hydrogenating a non-aromatic unsaturated hydrocarbon, comprising reacting the hydrocarbon with a catalyst precursor which includes a source of a group VIIIB transition metal from the second or third rows of the periodic table and a heterobifunctional ligand constructed with a phosphine center and an imine nitrogen center, in the presence of hydrogen and a promoter selected from secondary or tertiary acyclic alkyl amines in a suitable solvent which solubilizes the hydrocarbon, the catalyst precursor, the hydrogen, and the promoter.
