A valve assembly of novel configuration is associated with the main air induction passage of a fuel-injected, spark-ignited, automotive internal combustion engine for the purpose of regulating the idle air flow. The valve assembly has an inlet connected upstream of the throttle and an outlet connected downstream of the throttle. A pintle controls the restriction that the valve assembly imposes on the idle air flow. The valve assembly is controlled by the engine computer selectively energizing a solenoid on the assembly. In one embodiment the solenoid armature controls flow through another flow path of the valve assembly that parallels the idle air flow path. A movable internal wall divides the valve assembly's body into two variable volume chambers. One chamber forms part of the idle air bypass while the other forms part of the parallel flow path. The one chamber is essentially at manifold vacuum while the other is regulated by a bleed valve and two orifices in the parallel flow path. Positioning of the movable wall positions the pintle. In a second embodiment, one chamber is communicated with the idle air flow path by an orifice, and the other is communicated with the idle air flow path by constructing the pintle from a hollow tube containing the two orifices and placing the bleed valve external to the tube for direct action with one of the orifices.

Idle air bypass

A canister purge valve comprising: a housing (12) including a vacuum chamber (14) communicated to an extending vacuum port (16) and an opening (26); an assembly (40) received within the housing (12) including a valve seat (76) positioned within the vacuum chamber (14) and an axially extending inlet port (58) extending through the opening (26) in said housing (12). The valve including a plurality of passages (57, 60, 62) communicating the inlet port (58) to the vacuum chamber (14); valve means (90, 92, 94, 96) movably positioned within the vacuum chamber (14) for seating upon the valve seat means for biasing (98) the valve means (90, 92, 94, 96) against the valve seat (76) and means for generating (42, 44, 52, 100, 120) a magnetic flux signal in response to control signals for urging the valve means to seat upon said valve seat (76).

Automatically opening canister purge solenoid valve

A valve (10) comprising a housing (14, 16, 18) defining a plurality of ports (62, 70, 72) two of such ports terminating in opposingly spaced, axially aligned valve seats (54, 94). The valve includes an assembly comprising a coil (124) responsive to control signals and a substantially hollow armature (200) movably positioned relative to said valve seats (54, 94) in response to the magnetic force generated in response to the control signals. The armature includes seating element (212; 320) for selectively engaging either one of the valve seats (54, 94) and preventing communication therethrough, means for receiving, interior thereto, one of said valve seats (94).
