An ultrasound transceiver that overcomes many of the deficiencies of conventional ultrasound transceivers by providing the ability to transmit high power and high frequency arbitrary waveforms with low distortion and with the ability to monitor the transmit signals through the receiver during the transmit period, the transceiver circuit having a transducer element to emit an ultrasound signal and to receive a reflected ultrasound signal, a transformer circuit having a transformer with a secondary winding coupled to the transducer element and a primary winding, an H-Bridge transmit waveform circuit coupled to the primary winding of the transformer to generate a transmit waveform signal to the transducer element via the transformer, an FET clamp coupled to the secondary winding of the transformer, and a receiver circuit having an input coupled to the FET clamp.

Ultrasound transmitter with low distortion and concurrent receive

Vector Doppler Imaging (VDI) improves on conventional Color Doppler Imaging (CDI) by giving speed and direction of blood flow at each pixel of a display generated by a computing system. Multiple angles of Plane wave transmissions (PWT) via an ultrasound transducer conveniently give projected Doppler measurements over a wide field of view, providing enough angular diversity to identify velocity vectors in a short time window while capturing transitory flow dynamics. A fast, aliasing-resistant velocity vector estimator for PWT is presented, and VDI imaging of a carotid artery with a 5 MHz linear array is shown using a novel synthetic particle flow visualization method.

Estimation and display for vector doppler imaging using plane wave transmissions

An ultrasound imaging system with pixel oriented processing is provided in which a method of producing a Doppler velocity image is accomplished by emitting unfocused acoustic signals into a medium over substantially an entire field; receiving scattered and reflected ultrasonic signals on a transducer array in response to the emission; processing the received ultrasonic signals to extract information to construct a Doppler velocity signal corresponding to at least one point in the medium; and generating on a display device the Doppler velocity image from the processed Doppler velocity signal. Acquisition sequences and signal processing algorithms are described that provide improved quantification of fluid flow parameters, including improved discrimination between regions of blood flow and tissue. Very high frame rate Spectral Doppler and Vector Doppler acquisition modes for real-time and post-acquisition visualization over a large field of view are described.

High frame rate quantitative doppler flow imaging using unfocused transmit beams

An ultrasound imaging system with pixel oriented processing is provided in which an acoustic signal is generated, echoes from the acoustic signal are received at a plurality of receiving elements to obtain echo signals that are then stored, a given pixel is mapped into a region of the stored signals, the mapped region of the stored echo signals is organized into array for the given pixel after which the array is processed to generate a signal response for the given pixel to obtain acoustic information for the given pixel. The system can be implemented entirely on plug-in cards for a commercial PC motherboard. The system and method can be implemented for pixel-oriented or voxel-oriented image processing and display, eliminating intermediate data computations and enabling extensive use of software processing methods. Advantages include improved acquisition of signal dynamic range, flexible acquisition modes for high frame rate 2D, 3D, and Doppler blood flow imaging.

Ultrasound imaging system with pixel oriented processing

A system for acquiring an ultrasound signal comprises a signal processing unit adapted for acquiring a received ultrasound signal from an ultrasound transducer having a plurality of elements. The system is adapted to receive ultrasound signals having a frequency of at least 20 megahertz (MHz) with a transducer having a field of view of at least 5.0 millimeters (mm) at a frame rate of at least 20 frames per second (fps). The signal processing can further produce an ultrasound image from the acquired ultrasound signal. The transducer can be a linear array transducer, a phased array transducer, a two-dimensional (2-D) array transducer, or a curved array transducer.

A method and related system for improving resolution and frame rate of ultrasound images that includes specifying individual element transmit characteristics for each transmit beam in a set of transmit beams; determining various attributes of the transmit beams at field points in the field of view; using one or more of the attributes to determine if received ultrasound echo signals contributed by each transmit beam are qualified for use in image formation, and if so, how the signal should be processed; storing the determined information for each field point for repeated use with each new image frame; using the stored information to select and process subsequent received echo signals for each field point to produce an image parameter at the field point for each qualified echo signal; and combining multiple image parameters from overlapping transmit beams for a field point to produce a final image parameter that constitutes the field point value for the image frame.

Enhanced ultrasound image formation using qualified regions of overlapping transmit beams

An image reconstruction system method for forming an image of media using data acquired from an ultrasound transducer, the method including the steps of detecting relative motion between locations in the media and the transducer; determining relative media velocity from the detecting relative motion; setting a reconstruction period for an image point based on the determined velocity; determining the amount of acquired data to use during the reconstruction period based on the reconstruction period; and using the determined amount of acquired data to reconstruct the image point for display. The system includes a data acquisition system, a processor configured to process the data, and an image display device for displaying the image.

Adaptive ultrasound image reconstruction based on sensing of local media motion

The present invention relates to transmit apodization using a sinc function in an ultrasound system. The ultrasound system includes: a transmission unit operable to generate transmit pulse signals with transmit apodization applied by using a sinc function; a probe operable to generate ultrasound signals based on the transmit pulse signals to thereby form a transmit beam and transmit the transmit beam along a predetermined scan line among a plurality of scan lines in a target object, the probe being further operable to receive ultrasound echoes reflected from the target object; and a reception unit operable to form receive signals corresponding to a plurality of scan lines based on the ultrasound echoes.

Transmit apodization using a sinc function in an ultrasound system

Embodiments of the present invention may provide an ultrasound imaging system and method for forming multiple receiving scan lines from one original receiving scan line. Ultrasound signals reflected from one original receiving scan line are converted into analog signals having a center frequency. The analog signals are converted into digital data. The digital data are coarsely delayed, wherein the coarsely delayed data are extracted at a rate of n-times of the center frequency. Data of the multiple receiving scan lines are formed by performing fine delay and interpolation. For the interpolation, parts of the extracted data are selected at a rate of n-times of the center frequency and the multiple receiving scan lines.

Ultrasound diagnostic system and method for forming multiple receiving scan lines

A method and apparatus are provided for interpolating image lines from ultrasonically obtained scanlines of an image region. The interpolated lines are preferably formed one-quarter and three-quarters of the distance between each pair of received scanlines by combining weighted samples of the adjacent scanlines in proportion to their distances from the interpolated lines. The received scanlines are preferably formed by a beamformer which samples the received lines at quadrature phases of the scanhead center frequency and filters the samples by combining successive samples of a related phase. The image lines are scan converted by computing a grid of weighted values between each pair of image lines, and using the closest value for each pixel in the ultrasound image.
