A rotary vane machine includes a stator housing having an inner surface defining a stator chamber and inlet and outlet ports, a substantially cylindrical rotor rotatably mounted within the chamber, a crank axle rotatably mounted within the chamber and including a plurality of crank pins offset from an axis of rotation of the crank axle, and a plurality of vane pairs. Each vane pair includes two opposing vane members slidably received in the rotor and means for connecting the opposing vane members together and rotatably connecting the vane pair to a different one of the crank pins. Rotation of the crank axle causes the vane pairs to rotate and urge against the rotor, thereby rotating the rotor.

Rotary vane machine

A rotary machine includes a stator housing having an inner surface defining a stator chamber. The housing further defines inlet and outlet ports through the housing into the chamber. A substantially cylindrical rotor is rotatably mounted within the chamber for rotation about a rotor axis. A plurality of vanes are slidably received in the rotor and movable therewith about the rotor axis during rotation of the rotor, with tip portions of the vanes projecting outwardly toward the inner surface of the stator housing. A continuous, substantially cylindrical cam surface means defines a camming surface substantially concentric with the inner surface of the stator housing. A cam follower is mounted on each of the vanes contacting the substantially cylindrical cam surface. A cam follower retaining means is free to rotate with respect to the cam surface and defines a substantially cylindrical retaining surface which is concentric with the camming surface. The cam follower means thus positions the vanes during rotation of the rotor.

A gas cycle cooling system having a rotary compressor and expander driven by a common shaft wherein the compression and expansion of a modified reverse Brayton cycle is provided within a closed chamber by changes in volume brought about by vanes sliding within slots in a rotor. The rotor is positioned within the chamber to provide spaces between the rotor and the chamber wall which act as effective gas transfer passages between the compressor and the expander. Liquid from a first heat exchanger is circulated through the wall of the rotor housing adjacent the compressor portion of the chamber to remove heat during the compressor phase of the cycle. Liquid is circulated through the wall of the rotor housing adjacent the expander portion of the chamber to provide cooling for a second heat exchanger.

Closed chamber rotary vane gas cycle cooling system

A reverse Brayton cycle rotary vane cooling system having a compressor and an expander driven by a common shaft. The cooling system includes a plurality of vanes made of a carbon epoxy plastic composite with bearing support inserts molded into the plastic composite. A bolt passes through the bearing support inserts and plastic composite. Oil is supplied to the vane slots with any oil passing into the cooling gas being removed by oil separators.

High velocity rotary vane cooling system

A rotary machine of the type which includes a rotor rotatably mounted in a stator and carrying vanes mounted for radial movement to cooperate with the inner surface of the stator to, for example, compress a gas drawn into the stator housing through an inlet port. The necessary radial movement of the vanes during rotation of the rotor is accomplished by means of cam followers associated with the vanes which ride on stationary cam surfaces. The cam surfaces are round and have their axes positioned eccentrically with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor. Tension springs draw the vanes radially inwardly of the rotor so that the cam followers are held in contact with the cam surfaces. This provides positive vane control and prevents vane lifting while minimizing contact between the vane tips and the stator inner surface.
