A multi-row box connector having continuous ground planes formed as part of the connector housing for electrically interconnecting printed circuit boards. The multi-row box connector includes first and second insulative housing members each having thin metallic films deposited on the internal and external sidewalls thereof, respectively, to form the continuous ground planes. The thin metallic films may be deposited on respective housing members by sputtering. The ground planes provide early ground mate as well as EMF shielding and minimization of cross talk between the signal elements of the box connector.

Multi-row box connector

An electronic socket carrier system in which a plurality of lead sockets are mounted on a thin flexible carrier strip which can be removed from the sockets after mounting on a circuit board. The lead sockets each include retention elements on the socket body to retain the socket on the carrier strip and which can also be employed for locking the socket into a mounting hole of a circuit board. The sockets are cold formed or machined to have a plurality of barbs each with a ramp surface to facilitate installation of the sockets into cooperative holes in the carrier strip, and an edge portion for retaining the socket once installed on the carrier strip.

Electronic socket carrier system

An electronic socket carrier system in which a plurality of lead sockets are mounted on a thin flexible carrier strip which can be removed from the sockets after their mounting on a circuit board. The lead sockets each include retention elements on the socket body to retain the socket on the carrier strip and which can also be employed for locking the socket into a mounting hole of a circuit board. The sockets are preferably cold formed and have a plurality of barbs each with a ramp surface to facilitate installation of the sockets into cooperative holes in the carrier strip, and an edge portion for retaining the socket once installed on the carrier strip.

An improved anti-wicking connector for releasably connecting an integrated circuit or other electrical component to a printed circuit board. Electrically conductive contacts are pre-formed into a loop, horizontal section, and tail configuration for insertion into respective recesses of an electrically insulating housing. Housing recesses have top openings to receive integrated circuit leads and bottom openings to receive the contacts and through which the electrically conductive contacts extend for connecting to the printed circuit board. The loop of the contact is inserted into the housing recess and secured in place by heat-staking. Horizontal sections of the inserted contact loops are dimensioned to substantially seal the bottom opening of the recesses to prevent flux and solder wicking up into the housing which can tack or contaminate the I.C. leads during or after soldering of the contact tails to the circuit board. Integrated circuit leads are inserted into recess top openings until the distal ends of the I.C. leads abut the horizontal sections of the contact loops. Contact is also made between the end of the contact loop and the I.C. lead.

Bottom loaded I.C. socket

An electronic component contact which provides substantially lower insertion force while providing sufficient contact force to maintain good electrical engagement with a component lead. The contact includes a plurality of inwardly angled spring fingers which are laterally yieldable and which are of two or more different lengths. A component lead inserted into the contact initially engages the shorter spring fingers and thereafter engages the longer spring fingers, the sequential engagement of the spring fingers with the inserted lead providing substantially reduced insetion force. Once the lead is inserted into the improved contact, the normal contact forces of the fingers on the lead are sufficient to maintain good electrical engagement.

Stamped and formed contact

An improved electrical lead socket assembly is disclosed comprising a stamped and formed one-piece lead socket fabricated from a composite strip of at least two materials, at least one material having resilient mechanical characteristics, and at least one other material having different mechanical characteristics. The lead socket assembly may be further provided with superimposed strips of materials which have improved electrical conductivity characteristics or which are suitable for impeding the flow of solder.

Low insertion, stamped and formed contact sleeve

A dual function tool for inserting and extracting integrated circuits and other circuits and composites of dual-in-line or quad configurations respectively into and from circuit boards is disclosed. It possesses vertically adjustable opposing side plates having spaced inwardly-pointing tines at their lower ends for grasping an integrated circuit, and also possesses a mechanism for raising and lowering these plates, and a push block and associated mechanism for simultaneously releasing an integrated circuit and forcing it into a circuit board socket by uniform application of pressure. As the integrated circuit is removed from or inserted into a circuit board by a uniform application of force with no bending or twisting, the chance of bending or breaking integrated circuit leads or pins or breaking the often fragile body is minimized.

Combination insertion-extraction tool for integrated circuits

A connector or socket for detachably mounting an integrated circuit unit on a printed circuit board has single beam contact members precisely located and secured in respective recesses in an electrically insulating body. The contact members are formed of a strip material and each has a spring beam part extending up from a base to loop over the base and a post part extending down from the opposite end of the base. The connector body recesses are open at their bottom end to receive the loop contact portions therein and have a integrally formed stop member projecting into the recesses at their bottom end which permits the beam part of the contact members to pass by during assembly of a contact member into its recess and then serves to limit downward movement of i.c. terminals and isolate the distal end portion of the i.c. terminals from solder material.

Integrated circuit mounting socket

A motor protector having a thermally and electrically conductive housing with a closed end and an opened end and defining a switch cavity therein is hermetically sealed with a header assembly. The header assembly has an outer margin circumscribing a central electrically insulative glass portion through which extends an electrically conductive terminal pin. A thermostatic assembly is mounted on the distal free end portion of the pin within the cavity and includes a heater element which extends from the pin toward the closed end of the housing. A snap-acting thermostatic element is cantilever mounted to the heater intermediate the ends of the heater and has a movable contact disposed on the distal free end thereof. A stationary contact is disposed within the cavity and is physically and electrically connected to the housing adjacent the closed end thereof on a relatively flat shelf formed in the wall of the housing. The movable contact is adapted to move into and out of engagement with the stationary contact upon the occurrence of preselected temperature conditions of the thermostatic element. The housing is configured to provide rotational orientation to facilitate assembly thereof and in addition so that it can be inserted into a pocket formed in the windings of a dynamoelectric machine of various ratings or placed on the outer peripheral portion of the windings in close thermal contact therewith.

Protector apparatus for dynamoelectric machines

A connector or socket for detachably mounting an integrated circuit unit on a printed circuit board has single beam contact members precisely located and secured in respective recesses in an electrically insulating body by guiding wing portions of the contacts against shaped body portions which are then deformed over the wing contact portions to secure the contacts in the recesses. The contact members are formed of a strip material and each have a base with lateral wing portions, a spring beam part extending up from one end of the base to loop over the base, and a post part extending down from the opposite end of the base, the beam and post parts each preferably having a stiffening rib formed therein and extending into the base part to assure that the contact parts have a desired angular relationship to each other. The connector body has recesses which are open at their bottom end to freely receive the looped contact portions therein, has locating steps in the open bottom ends of the recesses, and has tapered tower portions between the recesses to engage and guide the wing contact portions against the locating steps and to be deformed over the wings for securing the contacts in the recesses. The body has tapered apertures of novel configuration communicating with the opposite ends of the recesses to provide versatile and more reliable guiding of i.c. terminals into engagement with the contact while providing improved terminal insertion, terminal contacting and terminal withdrawal force characteristics.

A motor protector has a tubular metal housing with open and closed ends, has a contact welded to one inner side of the housing near the closed housing end spaced from an opposite inner side of the housing, has a terminal sealed in the open housing end, and has a bimetal member extending from the terminal into the housing along the housing axis in spaced insulated relation to the housing to move into and out of engagement with the contact in response to temperature change. The protector is compact and hermetically sealed and is calibratable by housing deformation without loss of hermetic sealing. In some embodiments first and/or second heaters connected to selected motor windings via sealed terminals are compactly accommodated in the housing along respective sides of the bimetal member.

A housing is disclosed in which a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistivity element is mounted a selected distance from but in thermal communication with a thermostatic switch also mounted within the housing.

Electrical switching apparatus

A motor protector has a thermally responsive contact element mounted inside a flat, rectangular, open-ended metal can. A metal cover mounts a complementary contact and is secured over the open end of the can by can flanges to clamp an electrically insulating gasket between the can and cover. The contact means close a circuit between the can and cover but the thermally responsive contact element is movable in response to increase in temperature for opening that circuit. Integral crimpable terminals are provided on the can and cover. A flat metal heater ribbon having an insulating coating thereon has one end welded to the exterior of the can. The ribbon coating is deformed at selected locations and the coated ribbon is folded at those locations to fit closely against the three exterior sides of the flat rectangular can. The can terminal crimps the opposite end of the coated ribbon in electrically insulated relation to the ribbon for holding the coated ribbon in position on the can. In that way, the heater is adapted for automated assembly on the can to provide consistent uniform heat-transfer to the can. The heater is also disposed to be easily and reliably connected in series with the contact means in a motor circuit for improving the thermal response, cost and service life characteristics of the motor protector.

A thermally responsive motor protector device particularly adapted for protecting a small electrical motor against both overcurrent and overtemperature conditions in an environment requiring hermetic sealing of the protector has a structure which provides the device with the desired hermetic seal and with a very small thermal mass for achieving the desired speed of response to overcurrent and overtemperature conditions in a small motor while also permitting mass production and automatic calibration of the device at low cost and inexpensive installation of the device without risk of loss of calibration.

Hermetic motor protector

A thermostatic switch of low profile comprises a can with a stationary contact attached to the bottom of the can. A movable contact affixed to the end of a snap-acting bimetal member is positioned to make or break contact with the stationary contact. A flat heater has one end secured to a dimpled portion of a can lid and has its other end resting against the lid in insulated relation to the lid to extend generally parallel to the lid. This other end of the heater is also welded to the bimetallic member. The can and lids incorporate terminals. A gasket insulates the lid from the can and is positioned to a positive stop to a lead when inserting the lead into the lid terminal.
