A method for isolating subterranean formations or zones intersected by a single wellbore is provided. The method comprises perforating a zone intersected by the wellbore and pumping a sealing means into the wellbore to seal against the side of the casing above and below the perforations to prevent communication from the zone into the wellbore after the casing has been perforated. The method further comprises fracturing the zone through the perforations prior to sealing and thus isolating the zone. Other zones thereabove are likewise perforated, fractured, sealed and thus isolated by pumping sealing means into the wellbore to seal the casing adjacent the perforations to prevent communication from the affected zones into the wellbore.

A method of stimulating a well subsequent to the formation of perforations whereby, subsequent to the perforating, pressure is suddenly applied to the perforations at a pressure above the fracturing pressure to extend created fractures in the formation. A bridging means is utilized to isolate the upper portion of the casing from a lower portion having perforations. The casing above the bridging means is charged with a stimulation fluid. At a predetermined pressure the bridging means releases the stimulation fluid into contact with the perforations to substantially simultaneously create or initiate a fracture into the formation from each perforation.

Overbalance perforating and stimulation method for wells

A wireline set baffle for positioning in a well casing after the well casing has already been placed in a wellbore. The apparatus comprises a baffle and a setting or running tool engaged with the baffle and adapted for positioning the baffle at a predetermined location in the wellbore. In one embodiment, a lock ring may be used to lock the baffle to the casing at a predetermined location, and in another embodiment, collet fingers on the baffle may be used to engage the casing. The lock ring may be initially held in a non-engaging position by a lock ring retainer or shear pins. The collet fingers may be initially held in a non-engaging position by a cover which is disengaged from the collet fingers by a blasting cap. Engagement may be with an inner surface of the casing or a recess defined at a casing joint. A method of using the wireline set baffle is also disclosed.

The present invention is an improved apparatus and method for measuring downhole flowing and shut-in pressures to determine the condition of the reservoir and the potential of the well as a stimulation candidate. The tool string of the present invention is a novel combination of existing equipment that allows an electronic pressure gauge and shut-in tool to be run into the hole with coiled tubing. The present invention, in most cases, solves the potential problem of having to shut in or kill a flowing well prior to and after performing pressure testing, preventing lost production or potential well damage due to the killing operation. In addition, the present invention provides accuracy over current coiled tubing systems by reducing the effects of wellbore storage on pressure build-up testing.

The present invention provides a setting tool having a tubular sleeve assembly. An upper mandrel is disposed within said sleeve assembly and interconnected therewith by a rotational screw jack means. A lower mandrel is connected to the upper mandrel by a load transfer device for governing a maximum downward force which can be applied to the lower mandrel when the setting tool is set down on a packer. The load transfer means includes a casing connected to the upper mandrel, said casing having a support surface for engagement with an upper end of a packer mandrel. Resilient spring means is provided between the casing and the lower mandrel, and is constructed so that when said support surface is in engagement with said packer mandrel, a downward force applied to said lower mandrel must be transmitted through said resilient spring means. The maximum downward force which can be applied to the lower mandrel, and correspondingly to a sliding sleeve of the packer, is equal to a force required to fully compress said resilient spring means. Also, an improved releasable locking means is provided between the upper mandrel and the sleeve assembly so that the sleeve assembly may be released to allow free rotational and axial motion of the upper mandrel relative to the sleeve assembly.
