An interface includes a blast plate having plate structure, the plate structure being formed to substantially conform to a certain portion of an exterior margin of a hull of a certain vehicle and being semi-permanently mounted to the hull by mounting to certain mounting devices present on the exterior margin of the hull and having mounting structure for supportively mounting a standardized add-on device, the mounting structure being designed to facilitate the add-on device being readily mountable on and demountable from the plate structure, the plate structure having structural characteristics for acting to protect the hull from effects of a blast directed at the hull. A modular assembly and a blast plate are further included.

A ballistic grille structure is combined in a stacked array with a similar grille structure to yield ballistic performance capability greater than the ballistic performance capability of the original grille structure. The grille structures may be of the type currently used in single, unscathed deployments with each grille structure a truncated version of the current structure such that a synergistic projectile defeating capability is realized by the stacked array of truncated grille structures.

The invention provides an improved method and apparatus for bonding ceramic tiles to armor. The invention uses a toughened epoxy adhesive and a rubber interlayer to improve the bonding of ceramic tile to armor. A scrim cloth is embedded in adhesive layers to serve as a wick and spacer to uniformly distribute the epoxy.

A method and apparatus is disclosed as a passive armor system for use on the side walls and sloping front wall of a military vehicle as reactive armor which adds the element of erosion and disruption of the flyplates thereby improves performance especially against kinetic energy threats but also by shaped charge weapons without substantially increasing the weight of the vehicle and without the aid of explosive charges.

A spall backing material contiguously attached to an armor plate at least suppresses the formation of lethal armor spall from being propelled from the inner surface of the armor plate when the outer surface of the armor is impacted by a weapon with sufficient impact to release high velocity spall from unprotected armor. When the impedance of the spall suppression armor is equal to or greater than the impedance of the armor plate, the formation of lethal spall in the armor will be prevented. When the spall backing material is reduced in thickness to minimize weight and has an impedance lower than that of the armor plate, or a more powerful weapon is used, armor spallation will occur but will be suppressed by the spall backing material to minimize lethality.
