The present invention provides an improved nonwoven abrasive product. The improved abrasive product has a porous, lofty web of multiple layers of coiled, autogenously bonded thermoplastic filaments, binder resin, abrasive granules and size resin. When porous, lofty web, before adding binder resin, abrasive granules or size resin, has a coil weight in the range of 17 to 28 g/24 in,(1.097 to 1.808 kg/m,) and is variegated, and the coated porous lofty web exhibits a relatively high measured load/deflection value then the useful life of the abrasive product is greatly increased compared to abrasive products made from webs having lower coil weights and no variegation.

Durable nonwoven abrasive product

Caustic- and acid-resistant nonwoven articles useful for surface conditioning of sheeting, especially metal sheeting, and a method for the manufacture of such articles are described. The articles comprise a plurality of compacted, stacked nonwoven web elements, the web elements each comprising entangled fibers bonded together at points of mutual contact by an adhesive binder, the binder comprising a terpolymer of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. The nonwoven articles can be configured into any of a variety of convenient and useful shapes, such as roll shapes and slab or bar shapes.

Surface conditioning articles and process for making same

A low-density abrasive article comprising a nonwoven web and a multiplicity of abrasive particles which are bonded to the nonwoven web by means of an adherent binder. Abrasive particles useful in the present invention have particle sizes between about grade 4 to grade 36 and are made of an abrasive mineral having a Mohs hardness of less than about 8. The abrasive particles are preferably made of synthetically manufactured fused mullite. The low density abrasive article is particularly suitable for removing stock from a carbon steel workpiece.

Acid- and caustic- resistant rolls are prepared by forming a nonwoven web of randomly laid entangled polyolefin fibers, stacking a multiplicity of segments of the web into a pile, compacting the pile under a compaction force equivalent to a room temperature compaction force of about 20.times.10.sup.5 to 55.times.10.sup.5 Pa, restraining the pile on its compacted configuration, and, if needed, dressing the sides of the compacted pile to form a smooth cylindrical surface. The preferred polyolefin fibers are formed of polyethylene, polypropylene or polybutylene.
