This invention relates to a photographic element comprising a support, a radiation sensitive silver halide emulsion layer and a water dispersible polymeric disulfonamidophenol that is substantially immobile in the element. The invention provides color photographic elements that exhibit improved stability, color reproduction and robustness in terms of processing variations; particularly variations in red density due to sensitizing dye.

The hydroquinone compound has sufficient bulk that it is substantially non-diffusible in the photographic element and has in the two-position thereof an asymmetric tertiary carbamoyl substituent. These scavenger compounds exhibit very high activity, have excellent stability upon long-term storage and do not leave colored residues after processing.

Photographic elements comprising certain 2-phenylcarbamoyl-1-naphthol image-modifying couplers exhibit proper hue, a resistance to dye crystallization, and a resistance to leuco cyan dye formation. Such couplers can be utilized for their image-modifying effect and can contribute substantially to the overall dye density of an image.
