Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to a first trip unit that is configured to be coupled to a power distribution system arranged in a Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI) arrangement. The first trip unit includes an Input/Output circuit including a ZSI input terminal and a ZSI output terminal, a heartbeat signaling module configured to transmit a second signal to a second trip unit in a lower-level zone than the first trip unit, responsive to the normal condition, a first monitoring module configured to monitor a first signal received by the first trip from a third trip unit in a higher-level zone, responsive to the normal condition, and a second monitoring module configured to detect the fault condition. Devices, systems and methods to monitor and report wiring status for zone selective interlocking cables

A method involves a circuit interrupter installation having a circuit interrupter with a plurality of poles and an ETU electrically connected with a neutral current sensor situated in proximity to a neutral conductor. The method includes determining that a plurality of fundamental frequency phase current vectors, when summed, are substantially equal to a fundamental frequency neutral current vector, and/or that a plurality of triplen odd-numbered harmonic phase current vectors, when summed, are substantially equal to a triplen odd-numbered harmonic neutral current vector. Responsive to the determining, the method includes outputting a notification which represents a possibility that a neutral current detection apparatus is mis-wired, and/or employing with the ETU a reverse vector that is an opposite of the fundamental frequency neutral current vector in the ongoing monitoring for an event that would trigger the movement of the circuit interrupter from the ON condition to the OFF or TRIPPED condition.

A circuit breaker installation including a frame assembly and a circuit breaker assembly is provided. The frame assembly includes a conductor assembly and the frame assembly defines an enclosed space. The frame assembly conductor assembly includes a primary contact assembly and a movable secondary contact assembly. The circuit breaker assembly is movably disposed in the frame assembly enclosed space. The contact assemblies are configurable electrical components. The configurable electrical components move between a connect configuration, a test configuration, and, a disconnect configuration.

Method and apparatus to move an arcing fault to a different location in an electrical enclosure

A transfer system includes an energy meter, a transfer switch, an automatic disconnect device, and a detector. The energy meter includes an input structured to receive a first power source, and a power output. The transfer switch includes a first input electrically connected to the power output of the energy meter, a second input, an output, and a mechanism structured to transfer one of the first and second inputs to the output of the transfer switch. The automatic disconnect device includes a first input structured to receive a second power source, a second input, an output, and a mechanism structured to electrically connect or disconnect the first input and the output of the automatic disconnect device responsive to the second input. The detector is structured to detect presence of the energy meter and output a corresponding signal to the second input of the automatic disconnect device.

A chimney assembly is provided for an electrical switching apparatus, such as a circuit breaker including a housing and a number of poles. The chimney assembly includes a frame, an intake, a duct and an exhaust. A first side of the frame is coupled to the circuit breaker housing proximate the poles of the circuit breaker, and the intake and exhaust are respectively disposed at first and second ends of the frame. A first portion of the duct is coupled to the circuit breaker housing above the poles, and a second portion is coupled to the first side of the frame. The chimney assembly draws a volume of air through the intake into the circuit breaker housing, circulates the volume of air through the poles of the circuit breaker, and discharges the volume of air out of the circuit breaker housing through the duct and the exhaust.

A stop device for an electrical device cell includes a generally flat, rectangular stop member and a generally flat, elongated permissive member. The stop member is, preferably, part of a stop member assembly that includes a biasing device. The cell includes a pair of rails upon which a drawout electrical device is movably disposed. The stop member is disposed adjacent to at least one housing assembly rail and is structured to move between a first, extended position, wherein the stop member engages the drawout electrical device and prevents the drawout electrical device from moving from the first, installed position to the second, drawn out position, and a second, withdrawn position, wherein the stop member does not engage the drawout electrical device and the drawout electrical device may move from the first, installed position to the second, drawn out position.

A control circuit operates a dual directional DC motor from an AC power source. A controller has first and second position indication inputs adapted to receive respective first and second position indications. The controller also has first and second direction outputs, which respectively energize one of two first relay coils having contacts outputting respective AC voltages responsive to the direction outputs. A full wave bridge rectifier receives the AC voltage and responsively outputs a DC voltage, which energizes a second relay coil. A contact thereof directs that voltage to two sets of first relay contacts, which are also responsive to the direction outputs, and which respectively provide a positive or negative DC voltage to the motor. Another second relay coil contact provides a braking action to the motor responsive to removal of the DC voltage from the rectifier output following removal of the AC voltage to the rectifier.

A multi-mode transfer switch selectively operates in a first operating mode in which the utility source alone is connected to the load bus, a second operating mode in which only the microturbine is connected to the load bus, and a third operating mode in which both sources are connected to the load bus in parallel. The microturbine is commanded to operate in a voltage mode when connected alone to the load bus and in a current mode when connected in parallel with the utility source. If the utility source fails while operating in parallel with the microturbine, the utility source is disconnected from the load bus and the microturbine is reconfigured in a voltage mode. The transfer controller sends a wake-up signal to the microturbine upon loss of power for starting and providing power to the load bus.

An electrically powered, fast acting transfer switch utilizes a single action solenoid that, alternately, through a mechanical assembly, moves the handle of one electric power switch between OFF and ON positions. A coupling including a rigid strap operates the handle of a second electric power switch oppositely between ON and OFF positions. The mechanical assembly includes an electromagnet drive plate to which the electromagnet of the solenoid is secured and an armature drive plate carrying the solenoid armature. A latch mechanism alternately holds one drive plate and then the other stationary so that the electromagnet and armature alternately move to effect reciprocal movement of the handle of the one electric power switch, and through the rigid strap, the handle of the second electric power switch.

A manual operator assembly is provided for an interlock assembly. The interlock assembly includes a motor assembly that is locked in one of two positions by a brake assembly. The brake assembly is electronically controlled, but also includes a brake release pedal. The manual operator assembly includes a lever which is coupled to a shaft which is further coupled to a cam. When the lever is rotated, the cam engages the brake release pedal so that the interlock assembly may be operated manually.

A molded case circuit breaker is provided with ground fault protection by a modular unit which drops into a pole compartment in the molded casing in place of a pole assembly. The modular unit includes a housing forming an open faced cavity across which is mounted a printed circuit board with the ground fault circuit components and trip solenoid projecting into the cavity. The housing also supports the ground fault sensing toroid in a position for the appropriate conductors to pass through the coil. A bell switch and auxiliary switch are positioned by the housing for actuation by levers mounted on the cradle pin and crossbar, respectively. An integral leaf spring molded into the housing accommodates for manufacturing tolerances and fixes the positions of the various components.

An electrically insulated turbulator for use in an electrical device for automatically interrupting an overload current is a one-piece molded assembly with an arcuate portion arranged around a terminal screw and a downwardly turned flange for shielding the terminal from the ionized gases in the arc chute. The arcuate portion has several fins and spaced-apart planar portions, both of which are located in the path of the ionized gases. The planar portions have surfaces which cooperate with the fins to create a turbulent flow pattern to decrease the length of the gas flow, and thereby optimize the cooling effect on the gases and for directing the gas flow in a desired direction. The turbulator is preferably made of a gassing material which contributes to the deionizing of the gasses, which lessens the buildup of gas pressure. It also preferably has a blowout membrane in order to limit the back pressure in the device.
