A phosphor binding material and process is shown and described for LCD backlight systems. The improved process provides a residual phosphor binding material transparent to UV light. No UV light energy is lost to absorption in the binding material and more UV light energy is used to produce visible light. Because the UV light is better utilized in the production of visible light, overall lamp efficiency is improved.

An active liquid crystal multi-colored display panel structure comprised of triangular triads of colored display pixels which are rotated 90.degree.. The display comprises a plurality of colored pixel electrodes arranged in rows and columns to form a matrix, wherein a row control line is provided every 1.5 rows of electrodes, and wherein three column control lines are provided for each two columns of electrodes. Thus, a matrix of 720.times.720 pixel electrodes requires 480 row control lines and 1080 column signal lines. The active liquid crystal display structure can be directly driven by a video source such that 480 active lines of video signal can be mapped directly onto the 720 rows of pixel elements. A switching circuit is provided for controlling the arrangement of R, G and B pixel signals to the column source lines. The triads of pixel elements provided are rotated 90.degree. to maintain high resolution while allowing a standard video signal to be directly mapped onto the display without additional electronics such as a ping-pong memory.

An apparatus for achieving an active matrix liquid crystal display flat panel that optically eliminates bluish or purplish background luminance and fluorescence of the liquid crystal materials. Two polarized layers are placed in a crossed configuration one behind and one in front of an active glass thin film transistor (TFT) layer to block a majority of any background luminance. Two layers of tinted glass are further placed one behind and one in front of the active glass TFT layer to block any remaining background luminance which has leaked through the polarizing layers.

Night vision compatible color correction system

A video interface apparatus for converting an incoming interlaced video signal to an outgoing non-interlaced video signal for an LCD flat panel with an arbitrary number of rows and columns. The incoming video signal is digitized and stored in a memory. An address generator creates addresses for reading and writing data from and into the memory, and the resulting read data is used to reconstruct the digital signal into an image for display on the LCD flat panel.

Simplified image reconstruction interface

An electronic interface for converting an interlaced video signal to a non-interlaced video signal suitable for an LCD flat panel. An analog interpolator scheme is used in which the information available in an incoming video scan line is delayed and sampled, and output signals are created by interpolation between the sampled input and actual and interpolated scan line signals. The output signals are then converted into an integrated, sequential non-interlaced output signal having a frequency corresponding to the horizontal resolution of a scan line of the flat panel.

A flicker-free liquid crystal display driver system driving two groups of pixels with alternating polarities. The spatial differentiation of the two groups, which may be accomplished in terms of even and odd rows or columns, is small so as to diminish detection by a human eye of the flicker in the display. The driver system incorporates a level shifter, switches, drivers, a driver switch control, a holding means and a storage means. Input signals to the system include that of intensity data, a clock and frames. The configuration of the driver system may be of a single-edge or redundant drive. The system may be digital or analog.
