An end-of-car coupler includes a hydro-pneumatic cushioning device. The latter has a ported tube separating the hydraulic cylinder chamber from an outer annular chamber containing gas. Each port is fitted with a valve, the obturating member of each valve being a differential area piston. The valves are all closed until subjected to a certain threshold force by movement of the plunger in the cylinder when all those valves between the plunger and the end of the cylinder chamber open to allow liquid flow between the two chambers.

A clutch actuating system which is particularly suitable for connecting drive to the front wheels of a four-wheel-drive tractor. The system includes an actuating member movable between a first position in which the clutch is disengaged and a second position in which the clutch is engaged. A pair of adjacent reaction members (27,29) encircle the actuating member and have mutually inclined wedging surfaces (30,31) on confronting faces. One (27) of the reaction members is connected with the clutch (25,26) which is of the toothed-dog type. A number of elongated toggle members (33) are connected at one end with the actuating member (32) and extend between the wedging surfaces of the reaction members at their other ends. Movement of the actuating member from its first to its second position causes the toggle members to execute a toggle action and to be forced further between the wedging surfaces (30,31) to separate the reaction members (27,29) to engage the clutch and cause the toggle members to assume a stable position in which the actuating member is held in its second position by the toggle members thus holding the clutch engaged. The teeth (25,26) of the clutch may be angled on co-operating surfaces to provide a separation force which tends to disengage the teeth to facilitate disengagement of the clutch.

Clutch actuation system

A lever mechanism (10) suitably, amongst other uses, for use in the control of tractor draft links (22) from a location remote from the tractor operators station. The lever mechanism includes an operating member (40), a support (43) relative to which said operating member is displaceable (Z), a lever (42) pivotally mounted on the support about a pivot axis (44) which is also translationally moveable (X), a first formation (56) on the lever, a second formation (57) on the operating member, and bias means (53) acting to translationally move the lever on its axis (44) away from the second formation (57) to hold the first and second formations (56,57) disengaged when the lever is released. The operating member is displaceable in a given direction (Z) relative to the support (43) by translational movement (X) of the lever (42) on its moveable axis (44) against the bias (53) to bring the first and second formations (56,57) into engagement followed by pivotting (Y) of the lever relative to the support with the first and second formations engaged. When used to control tractor draft links the lever mechanism forms part of the draft link control system and is connected with the remainder of the system via operating member (40).
