A process for treating an aqueous liquid. The process includes: passing the liquid by force of gravity through a treatment area, the liquid having an upper surface exposed to ambient pressure; disrupting the flow of the liquid as it passes through the treatment area, and exposing the upper surface of the liquid as the flow is disrupted to UV light. Disrupting the flow includes directing lower portions of the liquid toward the surface of the liquid to bring such portions into contact with UV light. A process for treating an aqueous liquid in which the treatment process is monitored. This process includes passing the liquid through a treatment area to bring the liquid into contact with reflective walls submerged below an upper surface of the liquid, and exposing the upper surface of the liquid to light emitted from a UV light source such that UV light penetrates the liquid to strike the submerged reflective surfaces and to be reflected therefrom to emerge through the upper surface of the liquid. The process also involves determining the intensity of the UV light emitted from the light source, determining the intensity of UV light received by a UV light sensor trained to receive emergent light and determining whether the treatment has a predetermined effectiveness based on the intensity of the UV light emitted from the light source and the intensity of the UV light received by the sensor. Apparatuses for carrying out processes of the invention are also described.

Ultraviolet treatment for aqueous liquids

Method and apparatus for treating a pressurized liquid. The apparatus includes pressurized liquid treatment chamber having a window transmissive to UV light; a UV light source outside of the chamber to emit UV light into the chamber; a shaft which extending between inlet and outlet ends of the chamber which turns about a central axis of the chamber; a flexible cleaning member affixed to the shaft and engaging an interior surface of the window; and at least one member extending radially from the shaft into the treatment chamber to disrupt axial flow of water through the chamber.

Method and apparatus for treating aqueous liquids

This invention relates to an improved cooling system for a reactor having ultraviolet (UV) lamps, the radiation from which treats a fluid medium, for example, water, air or solvent. More particularly, the reactor system is adapted to treat contaminants in the fluids by use of UV emitting lamps which operate at high temperatures normally in excess of 300.degree. C.

Lamp cooling for a UV lamp reactor assembly

A reactor assembly is provided for destroying contaminants in fluids by the application of UV radiation to promote the destruction of the contaminants. The reactor assembly has a vertically orientated reactor chamber with a centrally located lamp emitting UV radiation and operating at temperatures in excess of 700.degree. C. A protective sheath transparent to the UV radiation encloses the lamp and isolates the lamp from reactor interior to define thereby an annular reactor space through which fluids to be treated flow. The fluids flowing through the annular reactor space and along the sheath effect a cooling of the sheath due to lamp heating. The lamp has a terminal portion at each end thereof. Each terminal portion has a temperature sensitive component. The lamp is of a sufficient length to extend the terminals beyond the end portions of the reactor which has a length equal to or greater than the arc length of the lamp. Cooling air is directed on to each of the upper and lower terminals of the lamp to cool the temperature sensitive portions thereby preventing deterioration of each lamp end due to excessive heating. In directing cooling air onto the lower terminal a pressure is developed which is greater than the pressure at the upper end of the sheath so that a control constant flow of cooling air is assured upwardly of the sheath and over the lamp. This constant flow of cooling air is assured upwardly over the sheath and over the lamp. This constant flow of cooling air is controlled to permit the lamp to operate at optimum operating temperatures to provide the necessary output of UV radiation to promote the destruction of the contaminants in the fluids.

UV reactor assembly with improved lamp cooling means

During the oxidation or photooxidation of contaminants in wastewater, a gaseous oxidizing agent is introduced into a wastewater steam. The mixed stream is passed through a liquid ring compressor prior to its entry into an ultraviolet light reactor. In an alternate embodiment, the oxidizing agent and the wastewater are each introduced into the liquid ring compressor.

Wastewater treatment process with an ozone contactor

An accumulation and storage system, preferably for palletized loads, utilizes a SAILRAIL (trade mark) air support system for guiding and supporting an elongated deck during reciprocal movement thereof. Alongside each edge of the deck is a pallet lifting/lowering mechanism which uses an elongated inflatable tube, such as a fire hose, to raise or lower an inverted U-shaped lifting member. When the lifting members are raised a pallet can be placed thereon and the deck can reciprocate therebelow. When the lifting members are lowered the pallet rests on the deck and can be moved along the system to a subsequent position where it is raised clear of the deck so that the deck can return to pick up another pallet at the input station. Logic controls can be used to operate the system quickly, efficiently and automatically.
