A sleeve () allows flow against gravity of molten metal into a casting mold. The sleeve has a sleeve body () with a longitudinal axis that defines a flow conduit for the metal. A check valve () is positioned in the flow conduit, arranged for limited axial movement in the sleeve between a closed position and an open position, although it is operatively positioned to be in the closed position in the absence of the pressurized metal. The check valve has a spool () with an internal flow conduit, a top end of the conduit blocked by an end cap (). Flanges () on the spool provide the limited axial movement in the sleeve. When lifted into the open position, metal flows into the spool flow conduit and through a porous structure of the spool, causing laminar flow and filtering inclusions.

Coated microspheres and their use

This invention relates to an improved process for casting a metal by pouring molten metal into and around a casting assembly, where a riser containing a sleeve is a component of the casting assembly. The process comprises (a) inserting a riser insert into the cavity of the riser containing the sleeve, and (b) then allowing molten metal to flow into the cavity of the riser containing the riser insert. The density of the riser insert is such that the riser insert floats on the surface of the molten metal when the molten metal enters the cavity of the riser and provides a thermal barrier to reduce heat loss from the riser. The sleeve is shaped such that the riser insert will not be forced out or float off of the riser cavity when the metal is poured.

The invention relates to exothermic sleeve compositions comprising (a) an oxidizable metal where the oxidizable metal comprises aluminum dross, and (b) an oxidizing agent capable of generating an exothermic reaction. The invention also relates to sleeve mixes prepared with the sleeve compositions, the use of the sleeve composition to prepare sleeves, the sleeves prepared with the sleeve compositions and the use of the sleeves to prepare metal castings.

The sleeve compositions are used to form sleeve mixes by mixing them with a chemically reactive binder. The invention also relates to a process for casting metal parts using a casting assembly where the sleeves are a component of the casting assembly. This invention relates to exothermic and insulating sleeve mixes comprising (1) a sleeve composition comprising stabilized hollow aluminosilicate microspheres, and (2) a chemically reactive binder. Sleeves are formed from the sleeve mix and are cured in the presence of a catalyst by the cold-box or no-bake curing process. The invention also relates to a process for casting metal parts using a casting assembly where the sleeves are a component of the casting assembly. Additionally, the invention relates to the metal parts produced by the casting process.

Sleeve mixes containing stabilized microspheres and their use in making riser sleeves

This invention relates to riser sleeves which contain markings and concentric grooves. The markings are used to as a guide so one can customize the size of the sleeves and the concentric grooves are used to help hold the sleeve in place when it is placed in the mold where it surrounds the riser. The invention also relates to the use of the riser sleeves in the making of metal castings.
