Method and apparatus for transmitting accessibility requirements to a server

A module is interposed between a multitasking operating system and the device driver for a graphics adapter including a frame buffer with a linear aperture for continuous, asynchronous data transfers. The interposed module may selectively intercept all graphics device driver function requests or simply pass such requests to the device driver, and provides a mechanism for generating graphics output in the frame buffer without utilizing graphics accelerator hardware on the graphics adapter. The interposed module is aware of the start and stop of asynchronous data transfers to the frame buffer. When asynchronous data transfers are started, the interposed module invokes the graphics adapter device driver to obtain access to the frame buffer linear aperture and sets its own internal state to active. While active, the interposed module intercepts all graphics device driver requests and employs its own mechanism to generate graphics output in the frame buffer responsive to such requests, without utilizing the graphics accelerator hardware. Since the graphics accelerator hardware is not utilized, the frame buffer linear aperture always remains enabled. While inactive, the interposed module simply passes all graphics device driver requests to the device driver. The interposed module is preferably implemented in accordance with the GRADD architecture model, with the mechanism for generating graphics output being provided by the VMAN and SOFTDRAW libraries.

Mechanism allowing asynchronous access to graphics adapter frame buffer physical memory linear aperture in a multi-tasking environment

A three-dimensional graphical user interface is provided wherein the windows have a &ldquo;thickness&rdquo; property. In the preferred embodiment, a window will have a Z plane position (z) and a Z plane thickness (cz) as well as the traditional x, cx, y and cy. This allows positioning anywhere in three dimensional space. Using either a three axis mouse or a conventional mouse with supplemental control (perhaps keyboard), each axis may be traversed to navigate the desktop. As the pointer moves along an axis, the user's point of view can change, bringing the view either closer/farther/left/right, depending on the direction of motion, which may cause the windows perspective to change, e.g., larger or smaller. The user's perspective can pass into and through the window-blocks. As the user moves through a window-block, the mouse mickey ratio changes so that, while the cursor position or user viewpoint might change relatively rapidly in &ldquo;empty space,&rdquo; it would change more slowly when the user's perspective or the cursor is moving through a solid window-block, thus making the window-block seem more substantial.

Three-dimensional GUI windows with variable-speed perspective movement

A module is interposed between the operating system and/or applications of a data processing system and the device driver for a graphics adapter within the data processing system. The interposed module may selectively intercept all graphics device driver function requests or simply pass such requests to a device driver supporting specialized (e.g., non-VGA) graphics modes. Standard (e.g., VGA) graphics mode(s) device driver support is accessible to the interposed module. When a specialized graphics mode is selected, the interposed is inactive and passes graphics function requests to the specialized device driver. When a standard graphics mode is selected, the interposed module is active and intercepts all graphics function requests, processing such request with available standard graphics mode support. Change of the graphics mode from standard to specialized or vice versa results in the interposed module changing from active to inactive or vice versa. Requests to set the graphics mode are similarly passed to the specialized device driver or processed by the interposed module depending on whether a standard or specialized graphics mode is requests. Initialization and termination function requests are both passed to the specialized device driver and processed by the interposed module. The interposed module is preferably implemented in accordance with the GRADD architecture model, with the interposed module implemented as a variant of a GRADD filter.
