A method, computer program product, and computing system for establishing a first file system protocol connection between a first storage system and a second storage system. A security descriptor of one or more electronic files on the first storage system may be queried for security-related information using the first file system protocol connection. Security-related information associated with a first file system protocol and security-related information associated with a second file system protocol may be migrated from the first storage system to the second storage system.

Multi-protocol migration system and method

A system can perform a migration. The system can, in response to receiving a request to perform a file system operation on a destination file system, wherein the request identifies a first source file handle, direct, by a second computer and to a first computer, to perform the file system operation on a source file system with the first source file handle, to produce a second source file handle, convert the first and second source file handles to corresponding first and second components of a destination file handle, perform the file system operation on the destination file system with the first and second components of a destination file handle, respond to the client computer with the second source file handle. The system can re-assign a network address when rolling back the migration, wherein a client is configured to use the second source file handle with the source file system.

Efficient transparent rollback of file system consolidation migrations

A system can migrate a source file system on a first computer to a destination file system on a second computer. The system can receive, at the second computer, a request from a client computer that indicates a file system operation, and that references a source file handle of the source file system that comprises an identifier of the source file system. The system can identify the destination file system based on the identifier of the source file system. The system can determine, from a source inode number of the source file handle, a source inode number segment. The system can determine, from the source inode number segment, a destination inode number segment. The system can determine, from the destination inode number segment, a destination inode number. The system can perform the file system operation on the destination file system using the destination inode number and the identifier of the destination file system.

Efficient transparent switchover of file system consolidation migrations

A system can determine that a first destination inode number of a first destination inode of destination inodes is equal to a first source inode number of a file. The system can create a second file on the source file system, wherein the second file is stored in a second source inode of the source inodes having a second source inode number of the source inode numbers. The system can determine that the destination file system lacks an inode that has the second source inode number. The system can move a third file stored in the first destination inode to a second destination inode of the destination inodes that has a second destination inode number of the destination inode numbers. The system can migrate the first file to the destination file system, wherein the destination file system stores the first file with the first destination inode number.

A method, computer program product, and computer system for creating, by a computing device, a first directory entry with a name using a majority protocol, wherein the creation may be done on a source side for a multi-protocol delta copy migration session. Minority protocol name information associated with the first directory entry using the majority protocol may be relayed to a destination side for the multi-protocol delta copy migration session, wherein the minority protocol name information is cached on the destination side. A second directory entry with the name using the majority protocol for the multi-protocol delta copy migration session may be created on the destination side. The name of the second directory entry created using the majority protocol may be reset to the minority protocol name created using the minority protocol name information cached on the destination side.

System and method for preserving a minority protocol name in a multiple protocol migration

A target data storage system performing a migration operation also responds to client requests by creating and maintaining a metadata cache for caching attributes of a user file as obtained from a source data storage system. A read-type client request is processed by (1) determining whether the metadata cache stores current attribute values, (2) if so, then satisfying the client request using the current values in the metadata cache, and (3) otherwise obtaining current attribute values from the source data storage system and satisfying the client request using the obtained current attribute values, and storing the current values in the metadata cache to be available for use in processing subsequent read-type client requests. A write-type client request is processed forwarding modified attribute values from the client request to the source data storage system for storage therein.

The present invention is a method for performing a multi-protocol scan of a NAS system by a storage virtualization system to create a multi-protocol file index. Current NAS systems may utilize two protocols, CIFS and NFS. Storage virtualization systems migrate, redirect or synchronize data between a primary and a secondary NAS. Present storage virtualization systems are designed to work with NFS or CIFS systems, but not both. The present invention enables a storage virtualization system to simultaneously or near-simultaneously operate using NFS and CIFS protocols. The present invention also provides for a multi-protocol scan of a NAS device to ensure that all data files and data file attributes are recognized and preserved during storage virtualization.

Multi-protocol data object scanning by a storage virtualization system

The present invention enables a storage virtualization system to identify and preserve symlinks stored in a mixed protocol NFS+CIFS NAS system. Using the results of a multi-protocol scan, a storage virtualization system may identify which data objects are symlinks. The storage virtualization system may also determine the symlinks' target path information either by monitoring access or by referring to metadata discovered during the scan. After recording this target path information, the storage virtualization system may provide symlink expansion capabilities separate from the client computer or the NAS system. In addition, this target path information may be preserved upon symlink migration to a second NAS system.

System and method for preserving symbolic links by a storage virtualization system

A system and method provides for querying and setting file attributes between Network File System and Common Internet File System network attached storage systems. Aspects of the present invention may be performed by a storage virtualization system that acts as an intermediary between one or more network attached storage systems. By querying and setting file attributes, files may be migrated between network attached storage systems while keeping the file attributes and primary location of the file contents intact. In addition, the present invention provides an additional aspect of ensuring that file names of multi-protocol files are compatible across every protocol.

The present invention is a system and method for reconciling results returned from a multi-protocol scan of a NAS system. Certain NAS systems use different protocols. Some may use the NFS protocol, whereas others may use the CIFS protocol. A scan of the NAS may therefore produce two data object names for a single data object. When a storage virtualization system is tasked with acting as an intermediary between the client and the NAS, these two data object names will cause errors during data migration, synchronization or redirection. The present invention is a method for using the results of a multi-protocol scan of the NAS in order to reconcile data object names that may present differently depending on the protocol applied.

System and method for reconciling multi-protocol scan results by a storage virtualization system

Electronic commerce transaction messages are processed over a network between a client and a server in a highly reliable fashion by establishing a secure or un-secure communications connection between the network client and the network server at an electronic transaction assurance (eTA) system, which is located in a communication path between the network client and the network server. The transaction type is identified in the message and the progress of the transaction is tracked using transaction models. Any failure in the back-end server system or in the network connections is detected and the failure is recovered from using an outcome determination technique. The failure of a node within the eTA system is masked from the network client by formulating an appropriate response and sending it back to the client such that the network client and network server that were using the selected node do not see any interruption in their communications.

Highly available transaction failure detection and recovery for electronic commerce transactions

A method and apparatus for identifying a device acting as a server on a network is disclosed which uses network data representing communications on the network. The network data contains source device, destination device, data transfer protocol and data volume information for each communication represented therein and may be collected by network traffic monitors or packet capture devices such as RMON2 probes on the network. Data relating to relevant server protocols is identified within the network data, and using the identified data, a device is determined to be acting as a server if it has the highest data volume for communications in which it is the source or destination device and which communications involve at least a threshold number of other devices. The method may be conveniently implemented in a computer program and may be used in conjunction with a network management application.

In a computer network of devices, at least some of the devices (i.e. the DCHP devices) have a static (e.g. MAC) address which does not change over time and a dynamic (e.g. IP) address which may change over time. There is disclosed a method and computer program for mapping the static address and dynamic address for the devices comprising polling said devices using said IP addresses and during said polling determining the MAC addresses of the devices, and providing a set of mapped static and dynamic addresses, said method including repeating the steps of the method at intervals. Using the method of the invention, it is possible, when entering a particular conversation in a database, to access the IP addresses, to determine which is the current DHCP device that address maps to, and assign the conversation to that device and store it in the database assigned to that device. Therefore, for each DHCP device, one can store a history of the conversations or traffic involved in that device.

A computer program detects a potential attack on a computer network. A list E is made from network traffic data including source and destination addresses of traffic on the network. The list E includes all source addresses in the data which are not allocated to the network and are not in a list X. A first address in list E is chosen. A number of data entries including A and B and representing network traffic passing between source address A, chosen from list E, and destination address B, allocated to the network, is counted. If the number of such data entries is more than T, address A is output, thereby identifying address A as a potential source of attack. If it is determined that any entries in list E are left, the next address in list E is moved to, and the counting, outputting and determining is repeated, otherwise, stopping.

Detection of an attack such as a pre-attack on a computer network

Apparatus and method for use in a network of, for example, computers, for generating summary data, such as traffic summary information, from a plurality of data records, the data records having a different temporal basis, for example, one hour or one day or one week, and different start and end times. The summary data is generated for a requested time interval having a requested start time and a requested end time by selecting a data record with a record start time corresponding to the requested start and an end time as far as possible from the record start time but equal to or before the requested end time. The data from that selected data record is processed, and the initial time is then set to the end time of that particular data record and the process repeated. In this way one can gather and process such data with a minimum number of steps.
