A communications network () for use by a utility () for communication, command, and control of the utility's distribution area for gas, water and electrical services including the utility's distribution system, security, workforce, and asset management. The network includes apparatus for obtaining information and data concerning usage of the electricity, gas, or water by each of the utility's customers, the operation of installations throughout the system, and how electricity, gas, or water is being distributed throughout the system. The information and data from each source () is processed to provide an up-to-date overview of the system and its operation to the utility's management and operating personnel. This includes identification of any current problems, including distribution or security, within the system, and asset monitoring and management to identify possible future problems which may occur within a predetermined period of time. Reports generated as a result of processing the information and data, besides providing current status information, also provide management and operating personnel with information as to ways of alleviating any current problems identified within the system, and steps which can be taken to forestall possible future problems which are identified.

The portable device may be moved from a carry to a use position, along the shoulder strap, without dislodging the padded region. In addition or alternatively, the carrying apparatus is a hand strap coupled at a first end to side of a portable device at substantially a center portion thereof. The second end of the hand strap is removably coupled to a strap attachment bracket positioned proximate the opposite side of the portable device, and having a bracket attachment area that can be reversed to support a right or left-handed orientation.

A flexibly interfaceable portable computing device includes a display coupled to a processor, which is coupled or selectively coupled to either or both of a keyboard and a recording unit. The display and the keyboard provide a first user interface to the processor. The recording unit is superimposable with a removable markable surface. A stylus allows user marking on the markable surface. The stylus provides a stroke signal and a stroke mark. The recording unit, the markable surface, and the stylus provide a second user interface to the processor. Optionally, the display also contributes to providing the second user interface to the processor. Switching among viewing modes for the display, and synchronization of information between the processor and a processor of the recording unit are also provided. A casing can enfold the display, the keyboard, and the recording unit to form a relatively slim profile. A portable computer system can have a display, a keyboard, and thick components enfolded and/or located within an overall thickness substantially equal to a sum of a first thickness for the display plus a second thickness for the keyboard, to present a slim profile.

A personal harness for a wearable computer on the body of a user has a waist belt and a shoulder sling that are integrally formed with each other. The waist belt is inelastic and forms a belt around the waist of the user. The waist belt has a strap with hook-and-loop fasteners for adjusting the circumference of the waist belt. The shoulder sling is draped over one shoulder of the user and has front and rear sashes with primary and secondary compartments, respectively. The primary compartment has a zipper along one side edge and a sealable flap at an upper end for containing wearable computer hardware. The secondary compartment also has a sealable flap at an upper end for supporting telecommunications equipment for the computer on the body of the user. In addition, both compartments have mesh windows for ventilating the equipment.

Streamlined personal harness for supporting a wearable computer and associated equipment on the body of a user

A portfolio computer notebook has outer hardback covers with a flexible spine. A portfolio computer is mounted to the inner surface of one of the covers, and a paper notepad is mounted to the inner surface of the other cover. Each hardback cover has a fold line that bisects it into two panels. The fold lines allow the &ldquo;footprint&rdquo; of the open portfolio to be reduced by approximately half of the area required by conventional portfolios without having to bend the cover back over on itself. The footprint is reducible regardless of which component the user wishes to utilize. For example, to use the computer, the user creases the hardback cover of the computer at its fold line such that half of the cover rotates and the other half of the cover stays parallel to the notepad. The computer remains mounted to the parallel half. As the computer and parallel half of the cover are moved over the top of the notepad, the two halves of the computer cover form a z-like configuration with the notepad cover. The footprint reduction is complete when the computer sits on top of the notepad and both halves of the computer cover are parallel to the notepad cover.
