The present invention includes a device for effecting deformation of a sclera of an eye, including an expandable, mesh tube having holes dispersed through an entire surface thereof and with first and second tapered ends, and inserted unexpanded to deform the sclera when expanded. A central portion is intrascleral, with the first and second tapered ends external to the sclera on top of an intact scleral surface to deform during expansion, and simultaneously causes the sclera to be deformed so that the sclera moves towards the inside of the eye while simultaneously causing the sclera to move towards the outside of the eye. The mesh tube includes struts, connecting points of the struts are of different sizes, the first and second tapered ends and the connecting points within the tapered ends are thicker than the connecting points of the mesh tube, and the mesh tube includes fixation tabs.

Device and method for treatment of retinal detachment and other maladies of the eye

A method of treating a detachment of a retina of an eye, the method including the steps of injecting a substance into a vitreous cavity of the eye, the substance slowing flow of fluid through the vitreous cavity into a subretinal space to reduce a rate of accumulation of a subretinal fluid in the subretinal space to below a rate of removal of the subretinal fluid from the subretinal space by retinal pigment epithelium; and permitting the retinal pigment epithelium to reattach the retina. The invention also includes devices for practicing the method.

Methods and devices for treating a retinal detachment

The present invention includes a device and method for treatment of retinal detachment, ocular hypertension and glaucoma, and increasing an amplitude of accommodation. The device includes a tapered, mesh tube that within a sclera, expands to deform the sclera, and when placed within the posterior sclera for the treatment of a retinal tear, the device expands deforming the sclera so that the retinal pigment epithelium comes in contact with the retinal tear to seal the tear. For the treatment of ocular hypertension, glaucoma and to increase the amplitude of accommodation, the device is placed within the anterior sclera over the posterior plicata of the ciliary body, which upon expansion causes the underlying ciliary body to deform, resulting in traction on the trabecular meshwork and deformation of the ciliary body, which causes lowering of intraocular pressure, and increases the amplitude of accommodation in patients with ocular hypertension or decreased accommodation.

The present invention relates generally to a device and method for the treatment of retinal detachment, ocular hypertension and glaucoma, and increasing the amplitude of accommodation. In an illustrative embodiment, the device includes a tapered, mesh tube. Once the device is within the sclera, the mesh expands to deform the sclera. The present invention relates generally to a device and method for the treatment of, ocular hypertension, glaucoma, and increasing the amplitude of accommodation. In an illustrative embodiment, the device includes a self-expanding wire. Once the device is within the posterior chamber between the iris and anterior lens capsule, the wire expands to compress the ciliary muscle. When the device is in place the scleral spur is moved posteriorly resulting in traction on the trabecular meshwork, which causes a reduction in intraocular pressure for the treatment of patients with ocular hypertension and glaucoma. In addition, the compression of the ciliary muscle increases the force of contraction of the ciliary muscle, which increases the amplitude of accommodation in patients with deficient accommodative amplitude and presbyopia.

Device and method for ciliary muscle compression for increasing the amplitude of accommodation

For use with a surgical tool for making incisions in the sclera of an eye to form a scleral pocket to receive a scleral prosthesis, a system and method is disclosed for determining a position on the sclera for locating the scleral pocket. The system and method determines an optimum location for the scleral pocket. The system and method determines a location on the sclera that represents the intersection of the lens equatorial plane with the external surface of the sclera. The front of the scleral pocket is placed at a location that is four hundred fifty microns posterior to the intersection of the lens equatorial plane with the external surface of the sclera.

System and method for determining a position for a scleral pocket for a scleral prosthesis

A segmented scleral expansion band adapted for implantation within or fastening to a segment of the sclera of an eye lying outside of and adjacent to the ciliary body of the eye, is formed from a number of arcuate segments, curved to match the curvature of the globe of the eye, and joined together at each end to form a complete scleral expansion band. The band is implanted in the sclera of the eye by forming circumferential tunnels, inserting the band segments through the tunnels, and joining the ends of the segments to form a complete scleral expansion band. The scleral expansion band is useful in treating presbyopia and other ocular disorders.

Laser procedure for treatment of presbyopia and other eye disorders

A system and method is disclosed for making incisions in the sclera of an eye to form a scleral pocket to receive a scleral prosthesis. The system and method comprises a surgical tool comprising a surgical blade for making incisions in the sclera of an eye. When a surgeon places the surgical blade on the sclera of the eye a pressure sensor in the surgical tool determines whether there is sufficient pressure between the surgical tool and the sclera of the eye for the surgical tool to operate properly. The surgeon activates the surgical tool to cause the surgical blade to advance through the sclera to form an incision having dimensions to receive a scleral prosthesis. When the incision is complete the surgical blade is rotated back out of the incision. The incision has the exact dimensions to receive a scleral prosthesis.

System and method for making incisions for scleral eye implants

A surgical blade is disclosed for use with a surgical tool for making incisions in the sclera of an eye to form a scleral pocket to receive a scleral prosthesis. The surgical blade comprises a rotatable support arm capable of being rotated by the surgical tool and a detachable curved cutting blade for making incisions in the sclera of an eye. The surgical tool causes the curved cutting blade to advance through the sclera to form an incision having dimensions to receive a scleral prosthesis. When the incision is complete the curved cutting blade is detached from the rotatable support arm. The curved cutting blade is then removed from the incision by pulling the curved cutting blade forward out of the incision. The incision has the exact dimensions to receive a scleral prosthesis.
