A process for separating oil from a lubricant composition containing solid particles. The contaminated lubricant composition is mixed with liquid or supercritical CO.sub.2 before the lubricant composition and CO.sub.2 mixture is filtered through a filter medium. The CO.sub.2 is then evaporated, leaving an oil residue. Mixing the lubricant composition with CO.sub.2 before filtration prevents the filter medium from being blinded by solid particles.

Separating solid particles from used lubricant compositions

Oil and oil additives separated from a contaminated solid particulate filter medium, preferably diatomaceous earth particles. Portions of a mixture of oil, oil additives and the filter medium are compressed into pellets that are extracted with liquid or supercritical CO.sub.2 to form a liquid solution. The solution is separated from the pellets and then heated to 20.degree.-60.degree. C. at a superatmospheric pressure to drive off CO.sub.2 gas, which is preferably recycled by compression into liquid or supercritical CO.sub.2.

Process for extracting oil from contaminated filter media

A metalworking lubricant composition comprising a propoxylated fatty alcohol; a carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid ester, or mixture of said acid and said ester; and water. The composition demonstrates a reduced tendency to form soap and sludge and to increase in viscosity compared with prior art lubricant compositions containing mineral oil.

A metalworking lubricant comprising an oil-in-water microemulsion and containing about 1-30 wt % natural or synthetic oil; about 0.5-30 wt % of a water-soluble surfactant, preferably a nonionic surfactant; about 1-20 wt % of an organic consurfactant, preferably 1,2-octanediol; and about 45-97.5 wt % water containing less than about 1 wt % dissolved inorganic salts. The lubricant is suitable for various metalworking methods, including hot rolling and cold rolling of aluminum and aluminum alloys.

An improved system for the monitoring of pH of a liquid containing oil and water by directing the flow of at least a portion of the liquid into contact with the electrode of a pH meter for measuring the pH of the liquid, interrupting the flow of liquid to the electrode periodically, directing the flow of a washing solution into contact with the electrode to remove any depositions on the electrode, and then resuming the flow of the liquid into contact with the electrode to continue the monitoring of pH of the liquid without the need for manual removal and cleaning of the glass electrode.
